I remember there used to be a pretty devoted following of the Rainmaker a few years back before they got discontinued, but does anybody still mess with them now?

Sure.
WHen "another online store" dumped there large inventory of rainmakers for $100 last year, it revived interest in them a bit.

I picked up one. I love it, mostly because its different then anything anyone else has.
Plus its cool. It works similar to an E-cocker. Very modular, so its easy to work on. many of the parts of "off the shelf".

Not much traffic here. I know BOSS and myself has one.
Most of the active Rainmaker owners post on the Brass Eagle forums at:
forums.beog.org

There is a group for rainmakers, where they send entire teams of rainmakers to tournaments, and have custom shops that still make specialized parts. (ie LCD boards, mac-mounts, etc).

Mine is extremely reliable. I have built my second one a few months ago with an angel grip frame and it has worked very well for me. I will be taking that one to the IAO when i play on the RMOG team. My old RM helped me and my college team place high in many central NY tournys and is also helped us beat all other college teams we came up against.

Well. I would say "Reliable, BUT...."

They have all the same problems that you might find in a electro-cocker, including dead-batteries, dirty-regs, and timing issues (from worn, broken, or misaligned parts).

Nothing really major, but you will probobly NOT be able to find anyone to fix it for you. So, you will have to learn how it works yourself, and do your own maintenence.

I was going to buy one and get started again--I had one a few years ago with all the trimmings: mac mount, stainless fittings, delrin bolt, aka valve, vxt Icebox and an ANS Gen-x reg. I was getting read to do more when my friends put a team together to play tourneys regularly. The one I had just wasn't reliable enough so I unloaded it, and pretty soon after that tourney series I didn't play for years. I hopped on the old RMOG forum again a few days ago but there wasn't really much of a response in terms of availability and upgrades, so I don't think I want to jump on it again. I've always liked them though, I just don't want to get a gun that I won't be able to get all the parts that I want for.

Actually i would have to say that the aftermarket for the RM has never been better then it is now. Rainman has done some amazing work to RM's and brought back all the hard to find parts and developed new and better ones too. If you want to upgrade a RM now would be the time to get into it before him and MadMarty get out of doing the work for you.

well i have picked up a RM with ALL the trimmings, almost more then i had on my first one, for $300. If you were going to start with a stock one and build it up it might cost a bit more. One of the first things i recomend are new regs and Madmarty mods. A RM is a little bit of a gas hog so you will need a reg with good flow, and an adjustable LPR is definitly needed (price depends on regs). MM mods will cost you about $50. Then from there you usually get a delrin bolt ($20), macmount ($20) (so you can clean up the front end and have a place for that new reg) and a tornado valve ($50) if you can find one. Don't get a madman rocket valve. If you plan on getting a grip frame from another gun and using an adapter, get the adapter that is also a macmount. After all that you will have great potential to perform, but will still be limited by a capped stock board at 9 bps. So a TALOC chip ($30??) is definitly the best bet. But if you are a big spender then the Thunder board is the best ($120)

Thats apples and oranges.

As far as PURE performance? The TES shoots faster, is more reliable, and has an ACE. So the TES is better in this regard.

Which is cooler? Well, I think the TES is a wicked good good, though it still has the "just a spyder-clone label", which detracts from the coolness. The rainmaker has "its Brass Eagle crap label", but its cool because THEY ARE WEIRD looking, and nobody knows what they are. So, probobly a tie here.

Why get a Rainmaker? ABSOLUTE BEST GUN TO TINKER WITH. Blowbacks like the TES are simple by design. This is one of there advantages, but it doesnt leave much tinker room.
People love the cocker because you can tinker (adjust, manipulate, fudge, etc). The rainmaker is very modular, so the options and configurations are endless.

But if your not the tinker type.... well, I'd stick with the TES. Great gun in the setup you mentioned.

If you use it as your primary gun and you know what your doing then yes it will be reliable enough. I have played many tournys with my RM and have not ever worried about it breaking midday. Other guys on my team however were having problems with thier RM's, but most hadn't touched them since last IAO.

I love rainmakers. I bought one to tinker with and they are the best. The real trick is to get them to work.

I have pretty much upgraded it as far as you can upgrade it and the thing still doesnt work. I fix one thing and something else goes. Im going to have it green and black acid washed. I also want the bolt cover milled. I guess I will have to wait till rainman takes work again.
