How to: apex tip on another barrel

First. Take the Apex unit off the barrel it came on. Just remove the 4 screws and it comes right off. When you take it off you'll see two white O-rings on the barrel. Take those two white O-rings off. Now, slide one O-ring onto the J&J barrel and push it down about 5 inches just to get it out of the way. Put the other O-ring right on the very edge of the tip of the barrel. RIGHT ON THE VERY EDGE OF THE END OF THE BARREL. Now slowly wrap electric tape around the barrel RIGHT UP AGAINST THAT O-RING. Wrap the tape nice and snug and make it neat, overlapping itself one layer on top of the other until the tape is almost as thick as the O-ring. Cut the tape with scissors so that the edge is nice and flat. Now, slide that other O-ring back up against the tape. Now hold the original barrel the Apex came on up against the J&J so that you can get the gap right for wrapping the second section of tape. This section of tape will support the back edge of the Apex. You can slide the O-ring down to get the thickness right but when you're done slide the O-ring back up against the first section of tape. When you're done you can hold the two barrels together and the tape should make the J&J look like it's the same shape as the original Apex barrel. Put the Apex unit on the J&J. BE CAREFUL TO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS. THE APEX UNIT IS PLASTIC AND THE SCREW THREADS WILL STRIP OUT IF YOU PUT TOO MUCH TORQUE ON THEM. These instructions will make alot more sense when you actually have the Apex barrel there so you can look at it. This "tape mod" works great and makes the Apex unit very sturdy and allows it to turn smoothly because the Apex unit is "floating" on the O-rings. I put the Apex unit on my J&J Ceramic and LOVE it. Good luck.

It's going to be interesting to see how well it shoots.

My friend had this on his A5 the other day.

Last Tuesday when we played he had the normal apex on there.

Yesterday he had it clipped onto a J&J barrel.

I'll have to watch the thing more carefully next time he brings it.

Hi, myslk230

First of all, thanks for your detailed description and pictures. It helped a lot and it was far better than my adaptations atempts.

I made the mod exactly as you described to an JJ Ceramic 16". I did not shoot with it yet, but the final result looked fine. The APEX can turn easily and I can adjust the friction with the APEX bolts so that it doesn't turn too easily.

But I have a few questions if you don't mind.
1) In the pictures it seens you used some kind of lubrification. Was it gun oil or some kind of grease?
2) I'm not sure if my electric tape width is the same of yours. It may be a bit shorter. After placing the barrel inside the APEX there was a small slack between the barrel tip and the APEX cradle limit. My fear is that the O-ring next to the end of the barrel could slip out of the barrel due to this gap. Did you have any problems with that?

I wonder if I should redo the wrapping with the outer O-ring placed not quite on the edge of the barrel. In that case, maybe I should follow your instructions backwards.
I mean, first I could place the tape that support the back end so that the barrel fits well in the APEX. Then place O-ring on the back, second tape, tip O-ring and if space permits (maybe my case), some kind of stopper (thin tape?) to keep the outer o-ring in place.

3) How was the noise of your combination?
My JJ 16" barrel alone was much quieter than the original APEX. was there noise increase due to ports reduction and the APEX tip?
