Well, there are many, MANY designs on the internet.
Here is one from my old friend Bill Mills
But the IMPORTANT thing to realize is just because you see it on the internet DOES NOT MAKE IT SAFE!!
There are a few basic designs I have seen or used that work pretty good:
1- PVC pipe with 12-gram changer. NO resevoir. Simple and cheap. Works pretty good. (Just screw in the 12-gram, and bang!)
2- PVC pipe, 12-gram, Sledge, on/off valve, fittings, etc. More complicated, but still pretty cheap. This one is probobly the most common. fairly safe.
3- Same as #2, but with a 7oz and mounts.
4- Same as #3, but with electronic solenoid instead of manual on/off.
All these use a simple 3" PVC pipe as barrel, and some sort of sabot to hold the paintballs (like a styrofoam cup). I have also seem people just use EXTRA long 3/4" pipes, field end to end with paintballs. (no need for sabots).
There is also the "spud-gun" variant. I built one once:
Safe? Probobly not. It worked great, but the field owner did not like the idea of me walking around the woods with lighter-fluid
Again, there is always the chance that the cannon might explode, and send a piece of shrapnel into your neck, and turn you into a human veggie, requiring a colostomy bag. So, be smart, and follow the pressure guidelines on any material you use.

I need to get an on/off. (This is Alpha BTW.. Foxtrot is a good friend of mine). What I'm going to do is take a 4 foot PVC length, cap it at one end, and on teh cap, somehow hook up a port reducer, connected to a quick disconnect, onto a remote. Now, screw the on/off into the remote. Screw in a tank. Now, fill the pipe with paintballs. Tape a piece of skimpy paper to the open end so the paint doesnt fall out.
Thro wthe tubeon your shoulder. A friend in the foxhole/bunker turns the remote on. Then when you signal, poomph, he turns the on/off to the on position, and theres a downstream bleed. Makes a lot of noise and shoots a lot of paint.
EDIT: Might need to regulate it to under 350PSI.

thats cool
i made one and it shot at lease a mile. This one you just use metal pipe, and i mean huge ass metal pipe and stick weld it all together. then use like hydrogen or something and light it off. if you want to know where to get hydrogen from, local welding shops suplly it.

<script type="text/javascript">

You could probably get a electric selenoid valve and work that into the system. I have a box of them here, but they're only 110psi.
Edit, yea nevermind. Been covered in HP's post. and I didn't see how old it was.
