In Need of Proto Help

Alright, ill start you out with some background information. I just got a Proto off Ebay the other night. I unfortunately do not have the pleasure of knowing large amounts about Protos. So basically I'm a Proto noob. I have been trying to read up on Proto as much as I can on here and the nation but I haven't exactly gotten all the information I needed about them answered. So I figured I would just bite the bullet and make a thread asking these questions.

1. What should I do to my Proto right out of the box to make sure it works fine?

2. What type of lube should I use for the bolt?

3. How often do I need to do that to the bolt?

4. What is Dwell? (i.e. What does it do? What is the best Dwell setting for a Proto? Where do you change the Dwell? How often do I need to set the Dwell?l)

5. How do I clean and lube the reg and do I use the same lube as for the bolt?

6. How often do I need to do that to the reg.

7. What is the LPR? and what do I do with it?

8. What are some upgrades that I should consider? (List them in order)

Thank you all for answering my questions and I will most likely be posting many more.

The following links should help you out with most of your questions:

Basic Proto Guide

Ultimate Sticky

Matrix Owners

Now I'll try to answer the questions best I can, but refere to the link to be sure.

1) You need to get an ASA on it, then you should just be able to air it up and shoot it no problem.

2) You can use Dye's Lube, Dow 33, Slick honey, or Matrix Muck, its pretty much preferance, and a lot of people like Slick Honey.

3) You should relube the bolt as much as you can just to make sure everything is in perfect condition. Some people lube everytime before they play, others lube every once in a while, accordingly the guy who lubes before he plays will generally have his gun in better condition.

4) Dwell is how long the solenoid is activated for. Refere to the basic Proto guide to learn how to change it and stuff, although out of the box it should be fine.

5) Refere to the Ultimate Sticky as it has instructions on how to clean and lube the ref the correct way. You should be able to use the same lube as you did on the bolt, but some people use two seperate lubes for the different parts.

6) If you lube it after ever 10,000 shots or so, I'm pretty sure you will be keeping it in good condition.

7) LPR is low pressure regulator. Leave it alone until you know more about it and then search around to find the propper way to adjust it.

8) Upgrades kind of depend on what you want done first and thats always preferance. What I would do is:

ASA (required for the gun to make it shoot out of the box)
Barrel
Feedneck
Trigger if you'd like
Anything else you want to do to make your gun unique or to make it fit your personal preferance.

If you dont already have it, your going to need an ASA and macro and fittings.

I have a unimount on my proto and thier simple to install, simple to use, work great and look great. as for the macro jsut buy a kit for like $10 or so with the fittings and your straight, its real easy to set up.

As for upgrades, a barrel is a must. I've never even used the stock proto barrel, but it is definatly too short. I have a 14' ultralight and it shoots/looks great, but kind of wish I had a 16' tip.

as for a new feedneck, I think it's preferance. I have the stock one on and it holds my halo nice and snug so a clamping feedneck is'nt on my list of priorities but shoot yours and decide for yourself.

Then speed upgrades. Triggers and new boards and such. CP triggers feel like hott sex on your fingers, but I like the stock one too. It's really adjustable so you can set it to exactly how you like it and it's simple. As for a new board, I have M3, it's fast and has some cool modes, but if your just playing rec and local tourney's you really dont need it.

Thanks Chrome. Do you have an just one Ultralight or are you doing like a homemade Ultralight kit. And how do you like your Proto you were talking about how you got it in my other thread, maybe once I get mine working we could meet some day and play at OA or Wholesalers.

When I get my ASA I might want to get one with a drop foward because I dont have the longest of arms. Any suggestions

I wouldn't suggest anything bigger than a 2" drop, 2" being the absolute most. I personally use micro drop on my cocker, the unis I have used on dm4's and protos were okay, I would have prefered it to be a little shorter.

i would prefer a new style CP rail and on/off rather then a unimount. If have short arms i still wouldnt suggest a drop, instead get a smaller tank like a 45/45

What size tank do you have? What you should do it get a rail/on/off and set it up. Then, hold the gun straight down with the tank against your forearm. It should end right where your elbow bends. That is the ideal length for the person shooting the gun. See how it is, and adjust the rail accordingly. I rock my uni, because 68ci tanks feel perfect to me.
