the only time i ever use vasaline was when my hopper would take to much for to get in and i used vasaline to get it in easier but besides that i doubt u should use vasaline for anything else on your gun.

i can say, definately no. vaseline will screw up your o rings. spend the $3 and get yourself a nice little bottle of pmi perfect gun oil.

but, if you really cant get your hands on that....automatic transmission fluid will work (yes, i have used it)

Well, the o-rings must be made of something other than rubber then, because petroleum destroys rubber. Unless I'm just way off...

WGP also recomends vasoline for the bolt orings. Its ok, but has alot of sticktion. also it will collect grime like no other and cause more wear on the orings. (dust collects and acts like sand paper on the orings.)
Oil is good, grease is better. My favorite lube is lube gel. found at radio shack for $3 a tube. its teflon based and stays where you put it.
In a pinch it will probably work. but get some good lube for the toolbox. (I would use it if I had to in order to get a day of ballin in!)

I was thinking about this more today. When you do oil a gun, you shouldn't be using so much that it could run down into anything. A "light" coat is the way to go... not drown the damn thing. LOL
I could definitely see Vaseline collecting dust and grime That lube gel sounds like the deal.

and what is rubber made from? i dont see how petroleum could ruin a different form of petroleum, but i guess its possible. i always used it on my cocker and it ran pretty smoothly, but its not a very "fast" lube... whether you put barely any or the entire container, its really thick and can slow things down if you put it in the wrong place.

Natural rubber is made from trees. Synthetic rubber is made from petroleum and/or coal.
But everything I find still says not to use petroleum based lubricants on rubber.

If you've used it and it worked, then I would say it's ok to use. It just hit me funny when they said to use it because I've always thought of petroleum eating rubber. Since there are different kinds of rubber, then I see where it is possible for it to be ok.
Just don't use Vaseline on latex rubber kiddies. LOL

yes, most o rings are a petroleum product. but, certain petroleum products have additives and want not that can be harmful to certain materials. it all really depends on the exact composition of the o ring as to wether or not vaseline would work. as an example, i would just like to point out that brake fluid is a petroleum product, as well as oil. however, if you were to put oil in your master cylinder (the thing that holds your brake fluid), it would completely destroy all of the rubber parts of your entire brake system...including all the seals and o rings.

as vaseline may be fine for cockers (except for the dirt collecting), it may not be fine for a piranha (which im sure it isnt).
