On this saturday I am going to my local paintball field to get a "try out" for a refereeing job. I kinda know the concept of it but iI kinda want advice on refereeing like tips and stuff.

Move around the field, don't just stay in one spot. If you're just reffing rec ball you don't need to constantly be in their face but do make sure they're not wiping or doing something wrong. If you're reffing speedball and tournaments you need to be moving around making sure you can see the front of most people on the field. If you think someone gets hit, or someone calls a paint check on someone, run there and check them out. I wouldn't call the player neutral because that just holds up the game, just check them out from the front and back and make sure there aren't any paint smears from wiped paint or anything. It's rerally not that hard, try to stay out of lanes though.

Just don't be a dick to people. When people are out, they know it, you don't need to be screaming at them. If they wipe it's a different story.

Use the shield to protect him if you are pushing him around in his bunker a little. If its rough competition, lay on the ground in front of him if have to. If a guy is moving up the snake or something that no one is seeing him do, don't watch 'em so the other team can tell, just keep a distant eye on him. Best advice, don't be afriad to get hit, and try not to block lanes, because they will keep shooting until you move.

dont be around the same area the secound ref is. you cant ref the whole field like that and there will be alot of people cheating because there are no refs around them. If you pull a player dont change your mind cuz they tell you its an old hit make sure they understand what you say is final. If people take there mask off jump on it right away and if they continue dont keep giving warnings pull them out of the game, we have stopped giving alot of warnings at my field cuz noone listens. We give one warning and they gone if they do it again.

I think the skill of reffing is something that can be built upon. What makes someones day is when a reff is cool, laidback, and friendly. But of course, he has to know his ****..

In rec ball you don't have to really worry about wipiung at all, if its a tourney you have to pay extremely close attention, people cheat whenever they can!

I've been ref for a while now and making sure your other ref's know and use hand signals can help keep games fast and consistant. You cant always hear each other, calling a paintcheck to another ref on the other side of a field is tough!! As far as I know there are only 3 or 4 standard hand signals, this is something you can discuss with everyone. It really helps!

I have been a ref for over a year and hear are a few tips.
- Try to stay near the action but not in the middle of it
- Learn the fields, Players will tend to do the same thing every game but once in a while they do some thing new
- Communicate with your other ref(s) if your the 2nd listen to where the head ref wants you.
- Communicate with the players : ie "Watch your fire, Dead players coming out" "Watch your fire, Ref coming threw"
- "Please" and "Thank you" go a long way ie:
"Player, Please tone it down this is Beginners"
"Thanks for putting your barrel plug in player"
"Please check you pod pack player"
- When asked to do a paint check, don't be afraid to take a hit cause it will happen.
- On the field you are judge, jury, and executioner. But don't be a dick about it.
- Don't argue with players on the field ask them please to leave and if they still question your call talk to them after the game
