The proto is the lightest, but has a goofy board and kick.
The DM4 is a longer heavier DM5 with the old trigger
DM5 is lighter then the DM4 and has the shorter bolt, new trigger, and better efficiency

would getting a proto and then the std lpr reduce the kick??

I'd get a proto b/c it's the same as the dm4/5 and is smaller and cheaper. Slap on a dye ul and get musashi for it.
