busted balls...first time playing with ion

i took my ion out for the first time today. i was using a small steel compressed air tank that only got like 500 shots........well i aired the gun up and the pressure was at about 195 psi it was as low as i could get it to go, and it started busting balls the first shots i took.. So i took the barrel off and put one ball in chamber and watched it fire, it just blew the ball apart.

It stopped once i played with gun a little bit and never busted another ball form where the tank was losing pressure, but i dont want to have to go through this every time i play.

could it be the high pressure tank or somthing?

What kind of paint was it? I use a 68 4500 cross fire and i have never had a problem. Then again i never messed with lowering my psi, except with installing a qev...maybe that might have done something. not accusing you of messing it up or anything, but except for adding upgrades to my guns, i rarely mess with anything but the velocity.

i thought the velocity adjustment and the psi was the same thing(the bolt at the bottem of the regulater) i had it turned all the way counter-clockwise which turns the the velocity down.

wait, you say it was ALL the way counter-clockwise, and you had 195 psi pressure?!?! That can't be right it should completely shut off the reg and not let any pressure in if the reg is bottomed out.

As for the blowing the ball thing

First, try some nice fresh paint because it may just be bad paint.
Second, try adjusting your dwells to your optimum settings
and Third, The manual says that your pressure should sit in the 180-200 range but every Ion I have ever seen that runs well has had their pressure in the 140-160 range (mind you with a qev).

My gun is set to 13 blips from the bottom on dwell (I don't know the ms) and my pressure sits at 140 and I get +/- 2 fps, no dropoff, and my velocity sits around 295.

ya it could be like air kickback where it like hungers for air (pressurizes) and then just blows forward really hard and breaks it on the detents, other than that u should turn the vilocity up atleast some but be sure not to close it all the way, maybe halfway up would be fine hit around like 160-190 which is fine for just shooting around the house.

the pressure i think is in the dwell setting, since i don't see a ASA adjustment like on a spyder. so if u increase the velocity (figured out how to spell it lol) and increase ur dwell ( like nyar did ) it should either improve it or stop it.

ok i'll try those things but is there somthing wrong with the reg. or somthing cause turning the bolt all the way counter-clockwise should turn the pressure all the way off like Nyarlothep13 said?

yes, when it is all the way counter-clockwise it should turn off the reg completely and let zero pressure in. It may be that you have some extra metal or metal shavings in there or the threads didn't get milled correctly etc. i dont know what to do about it other than check and make sure it is all the way out. It might just need a little muscle to get loose.

After I clean my reg I always put a small amount of dow (very small) on the threads to make it a little easier to turn and get rid of that teeth hurting grinding sound lol

I also use a 68/45 Crossfire and ripped through 2000 rnds of crappy field paint and never broke a ball. What kind of hopper are you using and did you have your ACEs disabled?
