ION PROBLEMS?! ::click here::

It’s been all too often I’ve heard the infamous problems; my Ion is leaking from…(insert part of marker here). Or, my Ion is dropping off after only a few shots and I cannot figure out why… well, I suggest you first try this small set of things and for the most part your Ion should be back in working order in little/no time what so ever.

In this order, change your battery: the number 1 thing I’ve seen happen to an Ion is the battery starts to die and the marker starts acting erratically, often people say, it's my dwell what could the battery have to do with this? But low voltage to the board could make it send the wrong signal around and mess up quite a bit of things... because the Ion boards are made so simply (even aftermarket) this problem seems to occur more frequently with this marker than any other marker I’ve seen.

Then, open up your marker and check to see if your QEV is loose or not screwed in, I know - that sounds stupid, why would it be loose... often I see this when people are rushing to put their marker back together before a tournament and what not, then end up shooting strange and having balls roll out... A quick remedy to this problem is to take some ‘Teflon’ tape and put a small bit on the part of the QEV you’re screwing in. Then, tighten the QEV only enough to make it stay and be secure – and only use your hand! This piece is delicate and does not need to be forced in any way – damage to this piece could cause your marker to cry like a baby who is teething.

Say your marker is leaking heavily down the barrel and the bolt is fully back, check to see if the boltstop's inner o-ring is still in. If the o-ring has come out it tends to be on the stem of the bolt. Just grease the o-ring a little before you put it back in the bolt stop.¹

Leaking down the barrel and Bolt creeps forward, check the green O-ring on the bolt for scratches and that it's in the right place. Remember to lube the bolt after either of the last two steps... also:²

While the marker is taken apart you might just want to check to see if the bolt is over-lubed as shocker lube seems to make the bolt stick when there is too much and most other lubes that the Ion can use do the same thing... if there is not enough lube, feel free to add some as well.

While the marker is still apart, you should just check the hoses to make sure those are in tight - if you have to, replace tattered and damaged hoses... Upon your discretion, you may decide it's time to put your marker back together and test it - if it works, GREAT! But if not, take it back apart and disassemble the solenoid. Clean it and then grease it.

Just as a warning, if you are not comfortable tinkering with the more delicate parts of your Ion, such as the solenoid, leave it to someone who knows how. Take it to your local shop and have them look at it, or even send the board to the manufacturer and have them look at it under the warranty.

That should be it, I’ve never seen a problem like that in an Ion where the problem wasn't fixed by attempting one of those things... so check all that and if it STILL does not work, come back we'll see what we can figure out, or just go to the ‘Ultimate Ion Sticky’ and check for problems there.

¶'s marked ¹ or ² have been contributed by Mortisdeum, thanks for the help!

Not bad.
You hit most of the problems aside from o-rings being blown out.

Leaking heavily down the barrel and the bolt is fully back:

Check to see if the boltstop's inner o-rings is still in. If the oring has come out it tends to be on the stem of the bolt. Just grease the Oring a little before you put it back in the bolt stop then regrease the bolt.

Leaking down the barrel and Bolt creeps forward:

Check the Green O-ring on the bolt for scratches and that it's in the right place.

thanks mort! you're right, i really should have put something aobut o-rings. i just saw a few things recently that i figured could be answered by the same set of generic quick fixes...

thanks for adding that - i hope if my post doesn't help that they'll continue reading for about three posts... lol.

actually, would you mind if i added that onto it?

As great as this thread seems, especially how you have a section about the battery, most ion owners get so nervous they burst onto here, they wont read this thread, they will just post. Although, this thread is still great, sticky it.

Sadly no. First it was the Draw bar (Holds the tool in the chuck), Now it's the the controler for the z-axis, it keeps loosing track of were the tool is positioned and messing up parts. If you lay gragh paper on the bed of the mill X & Y match the paper and Z would be coming up off the paper

Feel free to add my input to your post.

i've been hoping for a while that you could get your mill back up so i can get the lucky body for my ion and just send it to ya and pay ya to mill the heck outta it... lol...

anywho, pm me if you ever get it back working again - and thanks so much for helping me out on the post - i really should have thought about that...
