Regulator safety screw problem?

.I just unscrewed the safety screw, and there was a bunch of pink smear-y and some metallic debris in the hole and on the screw. The instructions say to unscrew this screw - did I screw something up (no pun intended)? If not, was it just dirty?
The screw thread is fine, and so is the thread in the hole. But the head of the screw and the entrance into the thread are all messed up in this way.
What the hell was that?

Your best bet is to put it back together, put some air on it and see if it works.

Well, I don't have a 9/16 deep socket wrench, so that's as far as I go anyway.
