when you plug some air into it, it does that rapid fire junk that tipmans do when they are low on co2/air. gauge on the regulator reads 500PSI max and will not go above that. my initial guess is that the regulator is dirty or something, but before I rip this apart for him, you guys have any ideas as to what may be the problem?

the regulator is ripped apart and every single oring is dry as a bone. I presume this is the way it should be? (lubing orings in some regulators is a bad idea, is that the case with this one?

there is your problem.
buy some paintball oil and put 4-5 drops on each o-rings you find.

spyders wont' be effected by lube. in fact, you can even put a good amount in teh ASA, then screw your tank on and fire; it wouldn't hurt it a bit.
