before anyone says this belongs in homework and all that let me say this. this isn't homework its for a scholarship and also if everything goes the way i'm hoping it will need its own thread. what i'm looking for are a couple people that read sci-fi novels. i have to write a short story that is a sci fi. so i'm looking for people that read them to give me input and go over my story and if it doesn't feel sci fi enough to give me some pointers. be prepared to do some reading right now i'm almost on page 4 and its single spaced. i could easily add some more pages to this thing. so please only serious people.

I say write a story with aliens in it, everything I have ever watched on sci-fi channel has managed to incorporate aliens into it somehow.

Write about aliens:

1) Invading earth(a classic)
2) Warfare against other aliens
3) Warfare against people

well the NUMBER ONE THING YOU HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT SCI-FI, IS THAT ALMOST ALL SCI-FIs ARE ALLEGORIES OF HISTORICAL EVENTS. if you can base a story around that, and come up with some original stuff, youll do great. other than that, your own ideas will only work. personally though, write something about 'neotokyo'. neotokyo, or megatokyo is a style of art that is drawn to show a 'futuristic' japan. its very interesting, look at sci-fi art too if youre interested

ja i would but i'mnot familar enough with it to pull it off.

also the storyline so far is it focuses on one guy and how he is dealing with a world war on mars. i haven't gotten far enough into it. but the "good guys" which is the side the main character are america, britian, france, germany, and a couple others. while the "bad guys" or the rebels involves countries like iraq, turkey, russia and a couple others. like i said though i haven't got far enough into it yet and the good guys and bad guys might swap sides...

One of the best sci-fi stories I ever read was "SQ" by Ursela LeGuin, I think.


Sci-Fi isn't just aliens and spaceships and techno-gear. Its alleogry and taking current practices to extremes in the future.


You could try writing a story about what would happen if whatever it is in your life that you like least (School discipline, nutrition, police, naptime, spankings, etc.) was taken to an extreme, started a new world order, etc.

I'd be willing to read it, but (no offense) it sounds mindless so far. You made it out to be "some dude goes to mars to fight in a big war." Not interesting. Been there, done that

Again, no offense. Your characters need something special and unique. I'm sure if you plan it out before writing, you'll get the hang of it. Although, 4 pages in, it is probably to late to start over.

the more i look at it the more i realize i don't know what i'm doing. but i feel if i can get everything in order it could turn out good.

*edit* also that summary didn't do my paper justice at all. yes hes involved in a war on mars but out of the four pages there has only been one battle and that was only like half a page. the rest has been tied into giving the character and other around him life and the story about how the war started and things like that.
