Public schooling
Come on, we all like to rant about it.
What standards do you think should be changed? What do you think should be completely gone out of HS? Is standardized testing just a bastard or worth having?
come on now, lets all rant a little.

I have no idea, I've gone to private Catholic schools my whole life.
I do think that teachers should be able to discipline kids better.

I think that public schools shouldn't force students to take college preparatory courses. Students should decide at grade 11 whether or not they will be going on to a university. If they aren't, students could be provided with vocational education via training and apprenticeships and would be ready to enter the skilled workforce straight out of high school.

at my school we have that option. we have a college prep schedule and then we have a bunch of tech prep options too. if u take tech u stay at the school and get all of your basic requirements and math and anglish and such done while taking some electives, usually set up for what u want to do when u finish high school. then for your senior year u go to a tech school and learn about things like cooking and contruction and carpentry and stuff like that or stay at the high school and finish out your college prep. sucks tho, cuz all my best friends are going to tech next year and ill be staying at the high school

College is overrated... Become a plumber or an electrician and be making 100K / year working on college grad's homes. Wish I would have done that... It sucks being a college grad and making less then 30k / year in your field. A really good techincal education needs to be recognized as much as that of a bachelor's degree from a traditional college... but I digress.
Oh well... as to what should be changed in schools? Tioughen performance standards for teachers -- if the kids don't pass legitimately, then your ass is fired. Provide more equitable tax distributions so that students from public school X get as much money/student as they do at public school Y. Institute school uniforms.
Just a few things that I can think of off the top of my head.
BTW -- NYY, seeing a naked family guy doing a pelvic thrust is..... disturbing...

Nothing. I've been in public schools my whole life... and it's fine. The problem is lazy kids, and parents who say it's ok to be lazy... and people who do NOTHING but blame the teachers. Sometimes teachers are a problem, but not always. I'll put my kids through LAUSD when I have 'em without a second thought.

I feel if public schools are to teach about life success in the readl world, we need more training in real world jobs and we should be able to keep up with technology, its ever so important. I would gladly pay huge taxes on education.
I also think we should have better history assements and mandatory business classes.

What medic said about not going to college and being a plumber or electrician is a good choice. Thats what my dad did and he makes twice as much(and better benifiets) as my mom did... and shes a RN.
But i do plan on going to college anyway... the field im going into, i have never checked how much it pays... but its what i wanna do. no matter if i only get 50k a year. ill be happy doing it.(but im sure it pays alot more than 50k)

i agree 100%, 9 times out of 10 when a student is failing, its HIS/HER fault or their parents' faults. as parents you have to push your kids to do well. if not then they learn that its okay to settle for bad grades. and too many times do i hear parents blame their kids' bad grades on something lame like ADHD. if you limit the amount of time your kids play video games and watch tv, then maybe they will spend more time on school work.

I agree. it's the lazyass kids who expect the teachers to do all the work. if someone isn't willing to learn, they're not going to learn.
what made me lol was when they tried to institute the exit exam here in cali. it was written at a 10TH GRADE LEVEL, yet 75% (maybe even more) failed miserably. yet these retards were allowed to graduate cuz they *****ed enough. well if you didn't ditch class, not do your homework and cheat on your tests you wouldnt be so damned stupid. they should follow through with the exit exam so that those who actually DESERVE diplomas GET diplomas, and all the slackers get a "certificate of attendance". that way the diploma actually has some value

me, sab, chrome, and numer1 were all talking about this stuff last night at like 3am... college isnt overrated at all. it depends what you do and who you were. college isnt for everyone, but if you're looking to become a professional at something and get a real education, then college is what you need. my mom makes 100k a YEAR from teaching.
and also, public schools vary so much. for example, the ones on Long Island are excellent, thats why the property taxes are so high, then you go into the city, and the schools are horrible. the kids barely pass.
btw does anyone know the statistics for their school for students who go to college? mine is 99.9%

Surprisingly when I went to a black crowes and tom petty concort with my brother and his friend, some drunk guy was talking about the same thing.
He kept saying how screwed up it was that someone that shapes his children's future is getting paid so horribly, while him(plumber) is getting paid so well to fix your toilet and such.
In my opinion teachers deserved to be paid a lot more especially how important one can be. Not to say a working crapper isn't important either
