careers
Now that im a senior in high school ive been thinking about careers and am almost positive that I want to become a firefighter since my parents would kill me before iraq if i joined the military. My question is, do i need to go to like a community college to get the basic training or do they do it there. Its in TN if any of you know about this kind of stuff.

Why would they kill you if you joined the military? That's pretty selfish.

Ok.. so you want to be a career firefighter... well my young apprentice come close and gain knowledge...
1) Get in good shape. Concentrate on upper body and leg strength. You will need power for deadlifting, dragging, pulling, and chopping. That and get in supurb cardiovascular shape so you have endurance.
2) Go to a tech college and get a 2 year associates degree in fire science or fire protection engineering (or whatever derivation they call it). Try and get some specialty training such as Hazardous materials certification or rescue while you are there.
3) Get at LEAST EMT-Basic certification, EMT-paramedic would be better. If you get the medic, get your ACLS, PALS, and NALS certifications.
4) Get some experience - see if there is a volunteer department in the area that you can join.
Once you have all this under your belt, then you will have an effective resume for becoming a career firefighter. However, get used to rejection. Most career fire departments have very limited availability. There are ususaly something like 200 applicants for a handfull of openings. That is why you really need to be on your A game and have TONS of qualifications.
Good luck. Firefighting and the emergency services are more then a job, they are a lifestyle. Once you are in, it is hard to get it out of your system. It is also a job that can eat you alive if you are not careful.
PM me if you want to talk more about it.

someone i know is becoming a firefighter. right now hes a senior, and his dad is the fire marshall in our town. basically he trained and learned how to do all fire-fighter stuff with the local dept. and junior firefighters. hes turning 18 soon and said he'll go to 'probation school' and hes allowed to go to real fire and help out. but he said he is going to community college, though im not sure if thats by choice or what...

theres a lot more jobs in the military than shooting guns and killing bad guys, if you're interested go to your local recruiter and talk to him. dont make any promises to him, and dont sign up for anything if you dont feel comfortable.
