I honestly hate them.

Good for film editing though.

its basically the same now, because macintosh OS is basically windows with some differences. but windows is easier to use in general. buuuutt its just different, and i guess a little more 'interactive' and entertaining to use mac OS.

EVERY single person that replies will hate Macs and have a PC.

Personally I'd get a Mac and I don't feel like writing out the Pros/Cons. So yeah,

try both?

you cant judge an entire os/brand on what you use at school. Usaully, the IT people at schools are among the worst avaliable and the way they have their network set up it doesn't work well at all with macs(this will not be a problem at college since colleges are much more mac friendly).

Macs, in terms of overall build quality, are much superior to any dell on the market. They use less plastic and yet are lighter. They also have higher quality minor components(ie: wireless card, tounchpad, ect). Im sure eventually someone will say that macs dont have the processor speed a dell would have. While a g4/5 does not have the raw clock speed(mhz/ghz) it is much more efficent, which causes the processor the frequently outperform pentiums that are rated at twice as fast. A mac laptop will also both run cooler and have better battery life then a dell(even when the dell is equiped with a pentium mobile).

In terms of software, with the exception of games(most of which will still be ported to the mac within a few months) the mac actually has imo better selection. Apple has all the iApplications(iMovie, iPhoto, garage band, apple works, ect) which work much better then any of their windows competitors. And even if you do want to use a program that originated on windows(microsoft office, windows media player) allmost all of them are avaliable for mac. also worth mentioning, you would have to try to get a virus or spyware program with a mac even if you dont have any securrity software.

In terms of transistion, i cant see any real problems. Ive owned both an ibook and a windows XP tower and i had no problems with the transfer either way. Both are similar, but the mac has some very nice extra features.

plus macs are secksy...

Listen to this man.

I switched to a mac about 6 months ago after hating on them for most of my life, and it was very easy to get a handle on. The tiger OS seems to be much more secure than windows is, but as of now nobody has really tried to tamper with it since there is many more pc machines out there than there is macs.

You're taking it to school, so figure if you will be compatable with everything else. It's nice to bring home work or put things on disks to print in the labs later.

I love using macs, and they're actually much easier to use than windows based comps once you learn to use them. Plus, they're just cooler.

I use a powerbook G4 and it DOES NOT run cooler than any pc laptop that I know of... in the winter i can use it as a hand warmer. It doesnt get too hot though.

I personally love macs, but every time a pc user gets on my powerbook tehy always crash it, i dont know how. The only two times I've had to restart because of problems was when my friends were on my mac and I came back to it frozen.

G4 processors are about equal in speed to the windows laptops. Next year apple will be switching to intel processors, so that'll be a huge increase in speed.

The biggest feature I love is Expose. You press F9, and all the open windows spread out. If you press F10, all the windows in teh application you're in spread out for you to select which one you want to view. (If you're in photoshop and you have 10 images open, it'll show all of them and you click the one you want to be in front to work on)

Macs are much more stable, I havent restarted mine in a couple weeks and I havent noticed any difference in speed. If you're into ripping movies onto your computer easily, Macs are your thing.

Apple computers are much more stylish than any pc i have ever seen. If you want to be different and don't mind your friends trashing your computer (until they see it.. then they'll <3 macs), then get an iBook or a Powerbook.

It will be compatable with wireless internet and networks, as well as the software. A few people here have Apple latops.

Mainly I'm just worried about being able to get my work done and uploaded compatible with everyone else, and being on-network. I think I should, I'll call my counselor tomorow.

Assuming your school uses microsoft products like word and powerpoint and such, you can get those for the mac and they will be fully compatible. The only thing that I dont like about the mac is that you cant use .exe files, but that does not usually pose a problem.

depends what pc laptop.

Some pc laptops use desktop p4's and those will run a hell of a lot hotter then anything apple makes. But your right, p4-m's and pm's will generally run at the same temperature if not hotter then a powerbook. ibooks, or at least my g3 one that im writing this on do run a bit cooler then the average pc laptop though in my experience. But your right since he was talking about a powerbook.

You also make a good point about mac being much more stable. I turned on/off my pc(desktop) after allmost every use(and a laptop would be worse). As of now, ive had my ibook on for 3-4 days straight and ive had it on much longer at one time before. Its also quicker to start up if you do turn it off. macs also are a lot better on battery life then the average pc laptop.

In terms of compatibility, most if not all schools' networks should be fine with you using a mac and iLife for your school work(which can save documents as .doc for office, .txt for universal use, and many other formats). Those that dont should have no problem with you using a mac and m$ office. Mac and pc compatibility is much overexagerated, while in the past there were problems now they are very compatible. A good amount(much more then the general public) of college students do use macs. However, its allways good to be sure before you drop that much cash on something so check with the school.

I'm considering getting a mac, too... I've always been anti-mac until my teacher convinced me otherwise.

After using my sister's I'm gonna buy myself one soon. With a mac nothing is like a secret, things are easy and they don't get all ****ed up evrytime you download something.
