Firefighting

Anyone here firefighters or emt's? Just thought id start a thread for all of us to to share our firefighting /EMS stories. I had a nice structure fire yesterday,it was a blast. Mad the interior attack and went into a room and found a fried pet rabbit.

I don't think it was fun for the owners...

And the child that is left without the fluffyness of the beloved rabbit...

Im on the fire dept. We hardly ever do enter structure fires, unless there is somebody there, or we can save it. Most of the time before we get the call the house/structure is completely engulfed. But friday night, we had to respond to a head on collision on a interstate. It was the worst i have ever saw, 2 fatalitys.

damn that sucks. the worst i saw was when a guy hit the side of a bridge at 140. When we got there the guy was dead and had lacerations to the head and neck...but there was no blood anywhere, except a little on the floor but not much. So we got him out and started getting the car on the towtruck and when it lifted up blood just ran down the ramp like a river...it was crazy as hell.

i have the utmost respect for people who do firefighting/EMT's and what not...its not like cops where there can be "bad cops" anyone who is a firefighter/emt is a good person

My half cousin chris is a firefighter in the bronx (in nyc). He says it's long hours of boredom and short bursts of shear terror. Sounds fun

back home the emts and firemen are all fat and lazy. they are over paid and do very...very little work when they do there response times are slow and they often do the wrong thing. so yes it is like being a good cop bad cop. If you don't know your job and are not physically able to do it then you are a bad emt. most big city ones though are true heros. I might be part of the volunteer later on.

hah jeez i didnt even think about it that way. thats a good point. luckily in the places i have lived weve had good fire departments, like last year when one apartment caught on fire and the firefighters were there in like 3 minutes lol because we lived right across the street from the firestation

We WERE going to burn it to the ground, but we had to put it out because the lady that was letting us burn it was complaining that too much smoke was getting in her house. I guess she'll have fun spending money on a demolition team to tear it down.

We were training so we burned each room upstairs separately, put it out, then went downstairs and did the same. Then right before we were going to let the whole thing go down the lady started complaining and the Chief shut the whole thing down.

Upstairs we were getting an amazing rollover. The heat was so intense my helmet melted and the reflective stickers all melted off and my Scott SCBA mask cracked.

I was planning on getting a new traditional style one like this anyway:

Damn was the fire right on top of you? That had to been an unbearable amount of heat even through your bunker coat.

ouchie. I have a helmet like the last one you posted. Cept it says "923". I have never been "into" a burning structure. But i have worked outside on a whole lot. But when i finally turn 18(8 day ) I will be able to go in. The worst fire i have been to, is when a local place called "Midsouth" burned down. Had to stay there for almost 12 hours. And there was about 6 Fire departments there working on it. Needless to say, we were the only one's that was able to contain the fire. We had 4 deluge gun's connected to a river.

Needless to say, that is what we had to do. Because the people working the fire before us, used ALL of the county's water.

We had to mutual aid a commercial structure fire a month ago. It took us about 1 hour to fight it and im not sure about overhaul but we were there from like 9pm-1:30am. Wats bad is there station was right across the street and they had only one engine out with 2 lines goin to the door. They couldnt make an attack cuz they had top wait for the key to the glass door. So we just went up and shattered the glass with a haligan tool. it was a fun fire except for the 2000' of hose i had to get back up on the truck.

Yeah the fire rolled right over us. The heat was ridiculous, when my mask started cracking I started to get burns on my forehead and had to haul ass out of there.

The foam demonstration truck that was there was amazing. I can't see the stuff going into the industry as a structural firefighting tool just yet because of the obvious destruction to the interior of the house, but it gets the job done twice as fast.
