Something you need to be aware of.
I just got two emails in my inbox, one was from eBay and the other from PayPal.
The eBay was pretending to be a guy yelling at me for not shipping the item or something, and he was going to call the police. They expect you to reply using the "Reply Now" button, which takes you to a fake eBay login page. Two things about this threw me off. The most obvious one is that when people on eBay send me a message, I get an alert in a different email, but the more important thing is to check the url.
Like I said, clicking Reply Now takes you to a fake sign-in page which looks identical to the normal eBay page, and has you log in. I assume from there it just takes your name/password.
This one is the PayPal email I got asking me to confirm my account for a security upgrade. This one is a lot more obvious. The biggest thing that will probably throw people off is just that it looks identical to the sites its imitating.
So yeah...watch for these. I also got another one from eBay saying my account was going to be suspended unless I emailed them back, and again, it took me to a false log in page.
It's a good idea, but I guess I'm just too amazing.
Anyways, yeah...just look out for these.

(Both URL's showing on the bottom are from me holding the mouse over the links asking me to confirm my account.)

yeah.. my dad actually recently foiled some big seller on ebay who was selling printers illegally. the guy bought Dell printers, took out the inside parts, sold them as *brand new* and then seperately sold the parts. the guy sucessfully sold 1400 units, not a single person reported it because it seemed legitamite. my dad called paypal to demand his money back, and they like thanked him because they're not allowed to cancel accounts without a complaint of some sort.

i think hotmail is filtering stuff it shouldn't, the only e-mail i've gotten in a long time that wasn't on my contacts list was my grandma.
i'm gonna turn it off and just filter out the spam myself, it's so damn obvious what is fake, well, wat i get sent is anyway.
of course, this is after i find out how to change the spam filter

These e-mail scams are called Phishing (as in fishing) where they develop a scam website that looks like the real thing. Often they ask you to verify your account name with your credit card or account numbers... not cool. They are very illegal but there are a lot of people that fall for them.
Good find, and good information.

i usually get like 5 of those a day. before clicking the links go to ebay and sign in, if its fake it will ask you to sign in again. Foward those emails to spoof@ebay.com.

nice heads up with the email thing
a family friend of ours (genius computer programmer guy.. big time) bought some windows cd's on ebay, and because of his close work with software, noticed that the cd software wasnt exactly right, and reported it to the FBI. the guy's house in california was raided, and 10,000 illegal cds were found sitting in his workplace. he's got several years of jail to go through now, and our friend who busted him had to go to trial in california to testify
pretty sweet

Yep, your right. There was a big article about this in Reader's Digest about this.
Good thread.

I agree. I get a ton of spam, but it all goes into that folder and I don't have to look at it.
