iPod Questions.
Well, if you saw the other thread, I recently won an iPod. I know a few of you guys have them so see if you can answer these questions for me.
1.What are podcasts?
2.What's this I always hear about the batteries being ****?
3.If I put all my music onto the iPod. And then get rid of it from my computer, is there a way to take the files back from the iPod and put them onto the computer again?
4.Do I need a converter to make my movies and shows ive downloaded work on the ipod video?
5.What's the deal with iTunes, I hate it, do I have to use it?
6.Do you make the playlists on iTunes?
7.I plan on never paying for anything, I download everything with P2P programs, is it easy enough to throw on your own things?
8.They clearly aren't plug and play, so if I'm at a friends I cant just hook it up to his computer and draft over his music?
9.Sell it or keep it?
Much appreciated. Clearly I know nothing about iPods and am just trying to decide whether I wanna keep it or not. I'm sure some of these questions I could answer if I read the manual.. but I dont want to open the package until I've made up my mind.

1. Ask someone else.
2. On my 3rd gen iPod it last extremely well.
3. There are programs you can get to download the music from the iPod onto your computer.
4. I think you can only use the movies you download from iTunes.
5. Yes, you have to use it. You dont have to download all of your music from the iTunes store though.
6. You can if you want.
7. From what I know you can.
8. Look to questtion 3. But, if you buy an iHome or an iFusion you can do that.
9. IMO I would keep it. My iPod has been worth every penny.

1) never bothered w/ podcasts
2) they can have a memory sometimes so don't topcharge
3) there is software for that. I think itunes7 can do it also finally
4) yes, it only supports a couple video formats
5) no you don't, i know winamp has a plug-in and other popular players may also be able to work w/ it
6) you can make the playlists on itunes or on your ipod right then and there
7) just direct itunes to your music folder
8) nope
9) decide yourself

1.Podcasts, as probably stated, are radio shows you can automaticly download. For example for a while when I commuted to work I would listen to the BBC news broadcast for the day. The podcast would automaticly update itsself when I plugged the ipod into my PC to charge.
2.The batteries used to suck but they're much better. If you get rid of the clicker (noise it makes when you scroll), turn the backlight off or to two-seconds, and turn the brightness down to 60%, you will increase your battery's life 20x.
3. Yes. Windows sees your ipod as a removable hard drive. If you go to tools>folder options and check off show hidden files and folders, a folder called ipod options will appear. Inside there you will find your mp3's. Only they're not MP3's anymore, they got converted to MP4 when you put them on your ipod. The filenames are all jumbled up in code, but the ID3 tags are still there (so if you import it to a music player, the artist and the rest of the song info will be there.
4.Maybe yes, maybe no. I forget, but I think iTunes will convert an MPEG file to MP4 when you try to sync it to your ipod. I suggest downloading the videora ipod converter. Its free and works wonderfully.
5.Its not bad. It takes up a lot of memory, granted, but I like the list layout where I have all the info to my songs right there. YOu don't need to use itunes though. A google will show you that theres a handfull of programs out there that can put songs on your ipod.
6.Yeah, you can create your own playlists.
7.Easy as any other MP3 player. You load your song library, you click sync, and your songs transfer. Period.
8.No. But you know how windows sees it as a hard drive? You can plug it in, take your friends songs, then go to your home computer, transfer the songs, then sync them to your ipod.
9.keep.
EDIT: I noticed a lot of false information in this tread. What I said I know is correct.
