I've been all over Europe, and Paris is my favorite CITY. I don't care for the french, but damn, it is a fantastic city.

Last year, I spent a week in Northern Ireland. Airfare was $250 roundtrip. Then I spent another $250 on car rental, gas, food, hostels, sites, beer, etc, for the 7 days.
So, $500 for the entire trip. Door to door. I'm a master of spending practically nothing, since the best stuff is free anyway. The secret is off-season travel, and make good use of Hostels.

That's actually quite a bit less than I'd imagine. I'd like to see a bit of Europe one of these days, but I've got time...

I've always wanted to get to Europe, hopefully someday I can hit up Rome and maybe Russia. I'd also love to go to Portugal, and I know a dude over there from paintball so that would be really cool. Awesome pictures by the way for a cheap (relatively) camera.

I used to think that. I used to dream about travelling the world, but thought I could never afford to. Then, years ago, I bumped into an old classmate who had been living in Europe and explained that its super cheap, as long as you know what you are doing.
For airfare, the rates are super cheap in the offseason. Both Aer-Lingus, British Airways, and other european airlines offer $99 fairs from Boston/New York/CHicago to major cities like Dublin, London, Paris. THen you can use Ryan air to jump to another city, like Amsterdam, Berlin, Madrid, whatever. SO $99 + $99 + $50 (taxes) is $250 airfare.
The trick is that fair is usually only from November to March. Its a bit colder, so I'll wait until the last week in March, since thats also the driest month in Europe. Thats the week when most seasonal attractions open up as well, so its the perfect time to go.
As far as the $250 weekly budget. That takes CAREFUL planning. Basically:
Hostel: $10-15 a day
Food: $3-5 a day
Sites: Most are free. (ie castles, museums, etc)
Car: $30 a day for clown car. ONLY use PART of week
Bus: $7 a day for when I don't have a car
Misc: Any money left over for gas, beer, phonecards, etc.
Basically, I use $30 a day as an average for me to get buy in Europe.
The BIG money saver is using hostels. They run $10 (in the country) to $20 (in the city). Price the lowest ones, and you never tip. They ALL have kitchens, so you can buy groceries and make your own food SUPER CHEAP. I like making peanut-butter and Jelly sandwiches because they are dirt cheap. Avoid eating in restuarants. That just wastes money. There are plenty of ethnic restuarants back home.
Most sites are free, like castles and museums. Sure, they ask for "donations", but when your on a tight budget, then skip that. Plus, hikes up mountains are also free. AVOID BUS TOURS AND OTHER TOURIST CRAP. They are just scams to make money.
Travel is a place you have to be VERY careful. Generally, I usually PUBLIC transport, like buses, trains, whatever the NORMAL CITIZENS use. It usually costs about $2-3 to get to the next town. SOmetimes $5 to take a boat to an island, and around $5 to rent a bike to get to hard to reach locations. Obviously, Taxis, and Bus tours are just money vaccums. I'll also often rent a car, but ONLY for a couple days, any ONLY so I can make trips into areas where there is no bus service. There are car rental companies that only charge $9 plus insurance, taxes, fees, etc. You end up spending more in gas anyway, along with parking, tolls, etc. Plus, you will get lost, so always use public transport if its avalible.
Then everything else, ie, beer, and babes. Beer costs money no matter where you go. Sometimes, it helps to buy a bottle of CHEAP liquor at a booze shop to get sauced BEFORE going drinking to avoid wasting $100 in a bar.

How much are drugs in Amsterdam? I'd really like to try and budget going to Amsterdam for a week or two. Planning on smoking a ton of weed, hitting up absinthe bars, more drinking, maybe some prostitution for the hell of it, etc.
Or have you never been?
