My hiking trip

I just got back from a weekend in the White Mountains. I stayed at an Appalachian Mountains Club hostel and hiked out of there for two days. Did three 4,000 footers and a smaller one (2,000 tops) on the way home.

It was a great weekend... Got friendly with some asian girls and met some cool people.

The photographer got creative:

Last hike, White Mountains are behind us (I'm on the far left)

There were these Grey Jays at one of the summits that we kept feeding cheez-its out of our hands (and heads). Our group's Puerto Rican tried feeding it off his stomach but he was too fat and the birds disinclined. At one point I had one in my hand.

I love hiking the Appalachian trail. Once you get up to the top you can keep hiking for miles with a beautiful view. I always wanted to hike the whole thing, but I would need to be in better shape. Last time I hiked 12 miles I was dead the next day.

Alpha- Was it the "Lakes of the Clouds" hostel? That seems to be everyones favorite, but I've always found it painfully crowded in the summer

Greenleaf hostel on Mt laffayette is in an equally stunning location, but with fewer crowds.

There is 3-4 other ones up there as well. When I was younger, and... not married, I would take a week off from work, and hop from hostel to hostel.

It was the Highland Center at Crowfords Notch. Its a brand spanking new facility. Theres a lodge with just dorms, then theres the main building which has everything from a fully stocked gear rental room, game room, library, plenty of comfy chairs and couches, and excellent food.

A lot of the people there were speaking French.. They could have just been from Canada.

The place was very nice... Everything was environmentally friendly. A lot of the building was constructed from recycled materials. Every bulb in the place was a compact fluorescent. Low flow shower heads (and built in flow control knobs)..

The only thing I didn't like was that a lot of the people seemed like snobby rich Frenchies.

Heres a link in case anyones interested... It's highly recommended.

It must be brand new. There used to be one there in the 90s, but they torn in down around 2000.

Looks like a great location. I've never hiked crawford path, so I'm tempted now.

Crawford Notch is right next to a bunch of great hikes.. And like I said the AMC facility is amazing. I had the impression that it was built within the last year or so. They have free LL Bean gear (anything you can imagine) to rent for guests, too.

Surprisingly enough we didn't see many people on the trail at all. At one summit we saw two or three people when we stopped to cook MREs but that was it for the whole day.

The views kinda sucked with all the cloud cover, plus there were light showers all over the place. I'll get more pictures from our photographer... He's going to come over my place to upload due to him using 56k. He took 400+ pictures.
