I did and did not find any prospects that looked particularly appealing. I believe I will be checking out another place tomorrow night that will be more comfortable and around the same price as the last.

you probably wont find that nice of a place if you want a month by month lease. Most nice places want insurance that youre not gonna trash the place and then peace so theyll make you sign a contract and give a first and last months rent deposit. (or last months rent, that's what I had to put down) But I had to sign a year long lease. However, I have heard of 4 month leases. Try and find someone that's subletting their place for 4 months. If it's near a school, you wont have any problem finding some one that wants to sublet. Especially in the fall semester because not many people are in your position, the subleter would be more than negotiable I think.

The place I checked out today was pretty decent, a lot better than the first place, with a similar rent. Two family house, I'd be living on the second floor with three other roommates. Parking is available but might be a bit of a hassle, and the location is a bit farther but it's still only about a 10-15min walk from school, maybe less (versus the other place which was less than 5min.). Unless I find something better this is probably going to be my choice.

-edit- Oh, and it's month by month rent although I have to pay the first and last month up front. Btw, I found it through Facebook so hooray to you Gabriot

If its month to month, thats pretty convenient. Maybe a bicycle will solve the distance problem or is it to hilly?

It's kind of hilly but I don't really mind walking anyways, seems like it's only about a mile or something. This is still very up in the air though, it may not happen.

So I guess some things have changed at the school, and I will in fact have a dorm assigned to me by the beginning of the Fall semester. I won't be moving into an off-campus place after all.

Cool. Are the dorms cool or like the normal brick enclosure with no room to breathe?

Not brick, something else that looks a little less... prison-like, I think. They're pretty nice if I remember correctly, somewhat small obviously but enough to be pretty comfortable, with a big closet, a bed, desk, dresser (for each person). I think they all have two set of windows side by side, maybe 8ft wide all together. It's UMass Lowell btw, I guess I'll post in the going to college thread now
