Renting a room
So, I need to get out of the house but all my schools dorms are apparently taken and will remain that way until about December. I've decided that renting a room nearby in a house or apartment is my best option.
I've been looking through the ads put up in my school (I'm taking summer classes) and I've taken down the numbers of six. I'll be calling and checking them out one by one starting tomorrow (already set up the first appointment).
For those of you who have been through this process, what advice do you have for me?

look for apartments that cater to college kids. The apartments that I live in aren't sanctioned by the school, but they're just for college kids. They're a lot cheaper than some outside apartment complex.

I am, I'm only contacting people who put up ads in the hallways of my school. The first option that I will be checking out tomorrow is a two story house that's all college students. On the phone I believe the lady said I'd be one of 5 students in the house (or maybe she said there are 5 others...? I forget), each of us gets their own room. It's within walking distance to my campus (there are three campuses at my school, all within 5min driving distance of each other but I'd prefer to walk obviously). Rent is $315 a month plus utilities which is split among all the students. Looking at the rates given in the other ads, this seems about average for this area. Only problem I can foresee with this one is parking, which is not mentioned. I can rent a parking spot on campus but that'd be another $144 for the year I believe (I think students are fighting this). What questions should I ask, what should I be on the lookout for when I'm checking this place out?

I don't know that I'll be able to meet them, they may not even be there while I'm checking it out.

just check the basics first. gas or electric stove, decent water pressure, water softener (if ya care), what their schedules are like, party habits, clean, try light switches, if it's just a fridge of it they have a bigger freezer (major problem for a lotta people, trying to share a fridge freezer is impossible, locks, does your room have a lock.
just **** like that. you generally get the sense of whether you wanna live there or not pretty quickly.

I didn't get a chance to meet the roommates, but I don't think I want to live there anyways. The location is good, it has parking, but the place is somewhat run down, very old. Seems like a somewhat depressing place to live
On to the next one.

No, absolutely not, because:
1) I do not get along with my parents.
2) I have a lot of trouble getting work done at home, I work better elsewhere.
3) I live an hour away which means-
-I have to commute about two hours a day.
-That's a lot of wasted time and energy.
-Makes it a lot harder to get help from other students and staff.

Yeah sorta, it'd have be pretty close to UML. That, and I only plan on being there at most until about late December, could very well be less than that (I'm hoping to find a place that does by the month agreements instead of by the semester or year).
