when a soldier dies in iraq...
..is it made news to the public?
Whenever a Canadian soldier dies in Afghanistan, it's in the Canada news right away, sometimes before the soldiers name is even released. Just wondering if it's the same in the states.

Nope, usually only if it's local.
The war over there doesn't sell in the news anymore..

The news stopped talking about Iraq since the war took a turn for the better.
You only hear about local deaths on the radio/local stations.

So sad but true, news companies are not fond of good news.

If its a large amount in a short time you'll hear about. 8 troops died on their last mission before coming home a couple of days ago and they were all on the main article of cnn.

I read the names and look at the faces of each coalition soldier killed in Iraq... of course I saw their faces, shared their meals, and lived with them for a year, so it is a little more personal to me then for probably the average person.
The news in this country is messed up and wouldn't report good news ever, unless they could some how make GW look like an idiot.
Freakin wankers.

The media "has" power nowadays because ignorant voters give it to them. People today are less likely to read newspapers, news publications and get their news by traditional means- it's all about seeing and hearing on TV and on the internet. Being infotained 24/7 is what our generation is used to, and that saturation of media isn't a good thing. Being informed is like going out hunting- you seek it out. Being infotained is like fishing- you wait for the fish to come to you. Plus if you stay in the same spot in either case, you miss out on a lot.
Problem is that it takes a real commitment of time and energy to be informed, and most people in our country have become either too lazy or apathetic to put in that effort. And when those kinds of people vote...
