RBG to DVI

Eforcity DVI-I Male to HDTV [RGB] Video Component Adapter - POTHXXXXAD05 - Buy.com

Will this connector allow me to play my xbox 360 on my monitor? I've got a VGA and DVI input on my monitor, but I'd like the use the DVI port.

If not, what do I need to allow me to play my xbox on my monitor?

rant

Dell sold me a "full HD" monitor without HDMI so ive got to use VGA or DVI

/rant

No, thats component, you won't get sound.

I had the same problem. My monitor takes VGA and DVI. I bought a DVI to hdmi cable in anticipation of the 360 I bought. Then when it got here I realized that the older models didn't have HDMI, so I was ****ed. Then I picked up a 30 dollar xbox 360 VGA AV cable and it works fine (like this Amazon.com: Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable: Video Games).

If your 360 has hdmi I'd get a 14 dollar hdmi to dvi cable from newegg (male on both ends). You'll also need a cable for audio (hdmi transmits audio but dvi doesn't), what you can do is use a female RCA to male headphone jack (3.5mm I believe) and that should make it compatible with whatever sound system you have. Or you could get a female RCA to female 3.5mm jack and just use headphones.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks dude. I took the time to search around a bit and found this:
Walmart.com: Cables Unlimited - HDMI to DVI D Single Link Male to Male Cable, Black - 3': Computers

I'll probably buy that with my 10 dollar walmart gift card, or maybe I'll buy a 6' one. My xbox won't be more than 3' from my monitor though, but I might use this one day for something else.. I'm not sure. Would this cable "broadcast" in true HDMI or would it just be the quality of DVI.

I'm a little confused about how the sound would work. I get that I need female connectors, but can you use the HDMI and the cable the xbox comes with at the same time? I guess I'm asking, what else do I need in conjunction with the cable above to get sound from the xbox?

Dvi and hdmi are the same signal except hdmi also transmits sound. There will be no quality loss "converting" dvi to hdmi because there is no conversion. In regards to sound you can use use the standard av cables while using the hdmi (you'll have to mod it somehow). And use an adapter to listen through speakers or headphones.

Well that's the thing. What is the mod? I could pull this off pretty easily I think, but I dont know enough about how xbox's work to set this thing up. If the HDMI and the A/V work at the same time then I could do this very easily, but I was under the impression they don't.

And thanks for the tip on HDMI vs DVI.

Well here's the mod Xbox 360 HDMI to DVI and audio (jack) « mrbrdo the blog you won't need to do it if you have the elite AV Cables because the stock one is too big for the HDMI and standard AV to be plugged in at the same time.

That sounds sick dude. I won't make you take a picture of your own, but if you could link me to the exact cable you are referring too it would be awesome.

If its the cable with the dvi and the A/V cables, PM me your address and I'll send the 10 bucks today.

EDIT: I just realized this isn't an HDMI cable. Can anyone attest HDMI being of better quality than xbox's regular cable? I'd rather spend an extra 10 bucks and get a great picture. After all I have a pretty nice monitor I'd like it to work up to potential.

Is it DVI or VGA?

I still get great picture with VGA, the only thing is that its analog whereas DVI is digital. But if its DVI (which I've never heard of but could be entirely possible) then its the same quality as hdmi.
