Toxic.. if you think 9mm are cheap.. then please tell me where you shop.. lol Like i've said before I'm comparing it to a 22LR.. The price difference is astounding. Not comparing it to other over priced and mainly useless hand guns.
9mm is a pretty weak caliber. I'm thinking of it in terms of hunting so it's really out matched by a 357 mag or a 500 S&W or some large pistol that you can actually hunt something other than squirrels and rabbits with. Hunting any large game with a 9mm is illegal and will result in your weapon being taken, fines, loss of hunting privileges, and so on depending on the state. So no a 9mm is not very powerful. I don't plan on shooting people...
I've been in a car wreck, was saved by a life guard as a young child, and have been shot in the face with a paintball.... :P So yes I use all of those things. lol
I'm not saying don't get a gun, and obviously i'm not anti-gun.. I used to sell them.. I just have never understood the want for 9mm or other "self-defense" gun when their uses are so limited. The only time 99.99% of them will be used is at the firing range.

Nothing is cheaper than .22, and on top of that, they are two completely different classes of bullet.
9mm is center fire and .22 is rimfire
Of course 9mm is weak against .357 and the largest handgun ammunition produced, the 500 S&W
You're comparing rocks to oranges, completely different (you're not even supposed to eat rocks, and oranges are yummy), and if you're not for 9mm, than just don't use it
I'd personally be fine with the right handgun chambered in 9mm using the right ammunition, and to be honest, I wouldn't want to get shot with anything, be it 9mm, .22, or any other bullet.
And while a gun maybe intended for the role of "self defense", I will indeed be hopefully using it mostly at the range. If I have to use my "self defense" gun more on people than on paper, then there's a big problem. I even hope that I use my self defense gun 100% of the time at the range. I thoroughly prey to the good Lord that I never have to draw a gun on anyone with the intent to protect myself or someone else, and potentially kill a bad guy, or anyone for that matter. That would be the worst day of my life.

Why would you hunt large game with a pistol anyway? Also you can get 9mm for .19c per round, which isn't expensive, of course comparing it to .22s will make it seem expensive but it isn't. Same with the power issue, you compare it to the extremes.
You need to forget the hunting issue, rarely do people buy pistols for hunting purposes. Most people buy them for two reasons either defense purposes which could mean they need a .380 up to a .454casull or they want it for plinking and a cheap range gun, which a .22lr is perfectly suited for.
I am not anti .22 either, I have several but if i had to only keep one pistol it would be my 9mm glock 34.

I use my 357 to hunt with. Its more of a challenge, allows me to use my bow stands during gun season, and is a lot of fun to get a deer with one. Like I've said all along I would get a pistol for one of two things; to hunt with or to plink at a range with... Hence why in the low caliber range I'd only buy a 22lr.

I like it!
We're having a "winter storm" here, but right now it's 53 and raining. In a few hours it will be in the 30's and snowing. Gotta love the midwest.

I'm thinking about getting a CCL, just to have it. Really have no idea what kind of handgun I'd buy.. I should have taken advantage of my gun nut friend (funnily also a marine, he had so many guns) while I was in Florida. They'd go shoot fairly frequently but they'd always leave at like 7am because they'd drive up to Alabama where he knew a guy had land to dick around on. Though if I went with him, I'd probably end up shooting everything BUT pistols/revolvers. Probably just going to go to a local shop and get a feel for different guns.
I also looked up the laws for acquiring a license, and it's pretty easy in Wisconsin from what I can tell. 4 hour class, fill out an application, send it with $50 and bam CCL. (pending background check, etc.)

For a carry gun AND a fun gun, I would absolutely recommend getting something chambered in 9mm
Recent 9mm defensive loads have been shown to be just as, if not more effective than comparable .40 cal and .45 ACP loads.
9mm also has the advantage of being the cheapest center fire round available, so getting money to go to the range to plink around/practice will be easier on the wallet compared to any other center fire round.
I'd definitely take a look at the M&P series, Glocks, and XDM's
Due to their striker fire design, you can get a very high grip relative to the axis of the bore, and recoil can be controlled better. Anything with a hammer and beavertail grip (i.e. 1911) will force you to grip lower compared to the axis of the bore, and exacerbate felt recoil. While it isn't a big difference, it is still a difference. I personally love the 1911 platform regardless, and if you practice/train enough, it becomes a non-issue. All the Glocks and Glock clones also are easier to maintain and run more reliably with less care. Something to consider if you plan on putting your gun away for a while before outings.

Got some recommended literature on the subject? Sites, forums, whatever. I'd like to get more informed before proceeding.
Glocks have always looked toy-ish to me, but obviously I'd want to shoot one before deciding against one.

I tend to like the feel of most glocks but the smaller versions are to small for my hand. When my finger or Fingers are handing off i tend to have a problem shooting them. I prefer to shoot rifles and shotguns but i always love a high caliber pistol. My neighbor owns a smith & wesson 500. That gun will put someone on their butt if their not ready to shoot something that big

M&P Shield. Your welcome. It is one of the best concealed carry guns made and it isn't going to break the bank.

As for reviews and such, I'd recommend looking up Nutnfancy on YouTube
If you can stomach his review style, he has some very good materials out there and has extensive time with a lot of different pistol platforms
