The Inmates are Running the Asylum

The Inmates Are
Running the Asylum

Idiocy from Florida (No, Not the 2000 Elections)
A National Merit Scholar was sent to jail and missed graduation after a 5-inch kitchen knife was found in her car and officials invoked a policy that forbids "weapons" on campus. Lindsay Brown, an 18-year-old senior at Estero High School, Ft. Myers, FL, spent a day in jail on a felony charge of possession of a weapon on school property and suspended for five days. The kitchen knife had been inadvertently left in the car after Brown moved some possessions over the weekend. Brown didn't know it was there until school security and Lee County sheriff's Corporal John Scheall pointed it out to her. Sheriff Lt. Bill Byrus said he sympathizes with Brown, but said the arrest is not up to the discretion of the officer or based on the student's behavior record. "This young lady made a bad choice," Byrus said. "But, the statute says what she did meets the probable cause requirements for an arrest." Translation: "I vos yust followink ordas."

'Zero Common Sense' or 'Zero Tolerance?'
Here's the latest waste or your tax money: two vicious second graders (that's right, eight-year-olds) at Augusta Street School in Irvington, N.J., were arrested and now face criminal charges of making terrorist threats. Their crime? It seems they stood up in class during recess and threatened to kill all of their classmates with toy "guns" they had made out of a folded piece of paper. School authorities suspended the boys under the district's "zero tolerance" policy and called the police. Police Chief Steven Palamara, who stated he supports the "zero tolerance policy," charged the boys.

Licenses for Toys
Children as young as four in New Zealand are being required to apply for "licenses" for toy guns. The scheme was launched at Tahunanui kindergarten in Nelson, South Island, and is spreading rapidly. Applicants for a license must say why they want one. Those who say they want to shoot endangered animals are told why this must not be done.

Youngsters who want to play cops and robbers are told that New Zealand police are usually unarmed, so shooting is forbidden. But children who want to put down a seriously injured pretend horse, or hunt possums - seen as a pest - may be granted a license. Card licenses must then be carried.

Gun "Buy-Backs" for Fun and Profit
A gun buy-back program to get "illegal" weapons off the streets had to be altered after a stampede of court officers tried to cash in. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes ordered changes in the initiative when he found out that court officers - some of them in uniform - were handing in their old .38-caliber service revolvers.

Because the program had pulled in only about 200 guns since the one-month window began July 1, Hynes upped the reward on Monday from $100 to $250 per gun. "We had a surge last night of about 100 guns and they all seem to be .38 service revolvers," said a source in the prosecutor's office. One court officer collected $1,500 by turning in six guns.

And They Wonder Why Massacres Happen
As New York city reeled from the execution-style murders of five defenseless employees at a Wendy's restaurant in May, 2000, city prosecutors were bringing criminal charges against a shop owner who prevented a similar incident on January 6. On that date, William Outlaw tried to rob a Flatbush Avenue electronics store owned by Garfield Hart. Outlaw, who is suspected of committing 13 such holdups in a three-month period, marched into the store at 10 a.m. and pointed a shotgun at Hart and his brother, Vibert. He herded them to a back room and forced both men to lay on the floor. However, Hart and his brother didn't wait for Outlaw to pull the trigger. They shot Outlaw with an allegedly "illegally" possessed handgun. Outlaw stumbled into the street and died.

Rather than being heralded as a hero, Hart has been charged with criminal possession of a handgun for defending himself against an armed robber, courtesy of the idiots in the prosecutor's office.

More Idiocy from New York
The day before and about a mile away from the massacre at Wendy's in New York, Jose Colon and two cohorts robbed Lilly Fu inside her boyfriend's cellular phone store on Kissena Blvd. The men forced Fu to the rear of the store and tried to bind her hands with duct tape. However, she grabbed a "legally licensed" handgun and fired at the fleeing felons, striking Colon in the neck. His accomplices left him to bleed to death several blocks away.

Fu was detained by police and is now being investigated by the Queens District Attorney's office.

The Gun Made Me Do It
On December 28, 1998, Riverside police officers shot Tyisha Miller to death as she sat in her car with a handgun. Apparently, the officers shot her because they (incorrectly) thought she had fired the gun. Police were called to the scene by Ms. Miller's family when they became concerned because she was nonresponsive and had the gun. In April, 2000, the City of Riverside filed a cross-complaint against Lorcin, the manufacturer of Ms. Miller's gun. The City's legal theory: the officers would never have been called to the scene had the gun never been manufactured, and therefore never been in Ms. Miller's lap.

Brilliant. Using that same logic, one would expect the City to also sue the car manufacturer since the shooting never would have occurred had Ms. Miller not been inside her car. In fact, why not sue her parents for giving birth to Ms. Miller since the shooting never would have happened had she never been born.

[source: The Los Angeles Daily Journal, April 10, 2000]

Use a Finger, Go to Jail
Wilson School, in Sayreville, NJ, suspended four kindergartners in March, 2000, for pretending to shoot each other with their fingers. In saner days, if noticed at all, such harmless playing would have been dismissed as a simple game of "cops and robbers." But, these are not saner days. Today, the inmates are in control. As quoted by the AP, school principal Georgia Baumann said the three-day suspension was imposed because the four youngsters' games "frightened other students." Assistant superintendent Dennis Fyffe added that the recent shooting incident by a 6-year old in Flint, MI, "really changed how educators think about the threat of violence. We will take the steps that are necessary to ensure the safety of our students and staff in all of our schools. If that means we get some criticism, we can live with that."

Even more scary was the moronic statement given by Teresa Kominsiewicz, the mother of three children at the school: "Kids can't play the same games we used to. I applaud the school for what they did." No doubt, punishing these kids for pointing fingers at each other made everyone in New Jersey much safer.

Don't You Know? The First Amendment Only Applies to Liberals
Portland State University professor Michael Hollister was denied a promotion and pay increase in retaliation for the fact he dared speak out against feminists who had criticized male writers. Prof. Hollister then filed a suit against the school administrators and faculty who improperly retaliated against him, but the case was dismissed by a federal district court judge.

Fortunately, a few judges on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recognized that the Bill of Rights even protects conservatives, and overturned the district court's decision.

Pick Up a Feather and Become a Felon
Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (1918), it is illegal for a person to take, possess, purchase, sell or barter "migratory" birds or parts of such animals. The law's obvious purpose is to prevent the hunting, poaching or trading of certain endangered or threatened birds. As usual, the government has pushed enforcement of the law to absurd extremes. For example, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it is a crime merely to possess feathers and empty nests of such birds.

As a result of this absurdity, one hapless American was prosecuted under this law for picking up a bald eagle feather off the ground at a zoo, incorporating it into a dreamcatcher, then giving it to Hillary Clinton.

Five-Year-Old Terrorist Strikes
School officials in Deer Lakes, Pennsylvania suspended five-year old Jordan Lock when he wore a fireman costume for Halloween. The miscreant's offense? His costume included a five-inch plastic ax.

Stated schools superintendent Joel Carr and Board of Education President Thomas DeBolt in justifying such harsh punishment: "As administrators of schools, with the safety of hundreds of children in mind, it is also our job to protect lives, too.

Right. Your tax money at work.

[Source, The New American, February 1, 1999]

Third Grader Brings "Assault Toy" to School
A 10-year-old third-grader at Viejo Elementary School, in Mission Viejo, CA, was suspended on April 1, 1999, when a three-inch toy cap-gun on a key chain fell out of her backpack. Capistrano Unified School District officials stated the one-day suspension was actually lenient punishment for such an "offense."

The unfortunate child's mother, Jaydell Gregory, stated: "I just can't believe kids are being suspended for stuff like that. I do believe we need rules and regulations. Kids can't be bringing BB guns to school. But a little kid, who wasn't even playing with it, on a key chain, that's just over the top."

Officials at Viejo Elementary School claim they had no choice but to make an example out of the youngster because banning the possession of any kind of "weapon" on campus ultimately makes schools safer. Of course, the officials were not able to explain how a three-inch toy could be considered a "weapon," or how banning them could make anyone safer.

Further demonstrating that the inmates are running the asylum, Mike Murphy, who oversees Newport-Mesa Unified School District's zero-tolerance policies, stated "Some people might say, 'My gosh, this is a little cap gun. . . but where do you draw the line?"

Five-Year Old Slasher on the Loose at School
A 5-year-old Buena Park, CA, student was recently transferred out of his school. The miscreant's offense: bringing a disposable shaver he found at a bus stop to class. Mind you, this was not a razor blade, but rather the disposable type with the thin blades inserted into the plastic shaver.

Rampage by Nail Clipper-Wielding Student Narrowly Averted
A 12-year-old boy was expelled from a Corona, CA. school for possessing folding fingernail clippers. After apparently recognizing the ludicrous nature of its reaction, the Riverside County Board of Education later overturned the expulsion.

Sue the. . .
Robert W. Lee of The New American made an excellent point in the March 29, 1999 "Gun Report." Mr. Lee cited a January 7, 1999, Associated Press report regarding an 82 percent increase in fires caused by candles since 1990. Candle "misuse" caused 126 deaths, 9,930 fires and $170.6 million in property damage in 1996, alone. Based on this alarming increase in candle-related injury and death, Mr. Lee wondered "If gun makers are held accountable for injuries and deaths resulting from the misuse of their products, then why not, say candle makers?" Good point. We should register candles and limit the public access to them. Let's "do it for the children." After all, it will be worth it if it saves just one life.

13-Year-Old Suspended for Dangerous Rocket
David Silverstein, 13, built a model rocket after seeing the movie "October Sky," a biography about NASA rocket scientist Homer Hickam. The boy made a "rocket" out of a potato chip canister and three match heads, then took it to his Glendale, Arizona, school. The obviously dangerous weapon was later discovered in a locker search by school officials who classified the toy as a "weapon" and suspended the child for the rest of the year based on its policy "zero-tolerance" for weapons. The 13-year-old may face even more severe punishment for this heinous crime: the police were also called, and the case is being referred to juvenile authorities.

[Source: The Arizona Republic, April 1, 1999]

Not Gun Related, But the Same Moronic Mind-Set
Real estate agents run the risk of violating federal law, and thereby becoming criminals, for simply providing prospective buyers with information about the quality of nearby schools. It would seem this heinous offense constitutes "'steering,' defined by the Civil rights Division of the U.S. Justice Department as either attracting people to a particular area or getting them to avoid it."

Handgun Control, Inc., the Violence Policy Center, and the major news media say they don't want to ban all guns, just the bad ones that criminals use. What's wrong with that?
What's wrong is that it's a lie.

At first, anti-self-defense organizations (such as HCI and VPC) said they wanted to get rid of cheap handguns-so-called "Saturday night specials"-claiming that these inexpensive personal defense weapons were the "firearms of choice" for criminals. Then they included ALL handguns, claiming that these were the "firearms of choice" for criminals (ignoring the fact that handguns are the overwhelming choice of peaceful citizens for self-defense) Then they added military-looking semi-auto rifles, claiming these were "the firearms of choice" for criminals. Then they added any rifle with certain "military" features, like pistol grips and folding stocks and the ability to take a high-capacity magazine. Now they've added "sniper rifles"-which would include any hunting caliber rifle with a scope-and claim that these pose a new and terrible threat to society. Along the way they've included "armor piercing bullets", which includes the cartridge of almost any hunting rifle, depending upon the particular armor you choose.

In the words of the gun-banners themselves:

"We are now supporting the President's bill which provides stringent restrictions on rifles and shotguns. We shall also get behind the bill which provides for national registration and licensing…I personally believe handguns should be outlawed…"
---J. Elliot Corbett, Sect'y, National Council for a Responsible Firearms Policy, in a letter, June 17, 1968

"…the final problem is to make the possession of all handguns and all handgun ammunition--[except for law enforcement]--totally illegal."
---Nelson T. "Pete" Shields, executive director of National Council to Control Handguns (now Handgun Control, Inc.) quoted in the July 26, 1976 edition of The New Yorker Magazine.

"The only reason for guns in civilian hands is for sporting purposes." --- Sarah Brady, Jackson, Keeping the Battle Alive, Tampa Tribune, Oct. 21, 1993.

We Are NOT "Gun Banners"--and never have been... Handgun Control, Inc., has never advocated banning firearms used for legitimate purposes such as hunting and recreation." [Note there is no mention of self defense or militia use, which are the primary reasons for the Second Amendment--GT]
---"Gun Measures We Don't Support", Handgun Control Inc. publication (March 16, 1999).

"Americans are ready to hate somebody, and it's going to be the gun industry."
---Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center, May 16, 1994 issue of Newsweek Magazine.

"The word 'hate' is a very carefully chosen word. There's got to be a real sense of revulsion and disgust… People are looking for someone to blame, someone who's the cause of their problems, and it should be the gun industry. These guys are the living embodiment of the slogan, 'Guns don't kill people-people kill people'. They're complete mercenaries."
--- Josh Sugarmann of the Violence Policy Center, June 13, 1994 issue of The New American Magazine,

"…banning the private sale and possession of handguns; banning the private sale and possession of military-style assault weapons; [etc.]"
---Violence Policy Center recommendations in their pamphlet The Second Amendment: No Right to Keep and Bear Arms. [Take note of the very title of the pamphlet--GT]

"Our goal is to not allow anybody to buy a handgun. In the meantime, we think there ought to be strict licensing and regulation."
--- Michael K. Beard, president of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, quoted in the Washington Times, Dec. 9, 1993.

"As you probably know by now, Time's editors, in the April 13 issue, took a strong position in support of an outright ban on handguns for private use."
--- Time Magazine, Letter to the NRA, April 24, 1981.

"There is no reason for anyone in this country, for anyone except a police officer or a military person, to buy, to own, to have, to use, a handgun. The only way to control handgun use in this country is to prohibit the guns. And the only way to do that is to change the Constitution."
--- Michael Gartner, former NBC News President, USA Today, January 16, 1992.

"The only way to discourage the gun culture is to remove the guns from the hands and shoulders of people who are not in the law enforcement business."
---Editorial, New York Times, Sept. 24, 1975. [ALL citizens are legally empowered to enforce the law-and do so every day--GT]

"The truth is, [handguns] are used to assassinate people, to kill people, because they are very easily concealed, you can drop them in any pocket."
--- John Magaw, Director of BATF, interviewed by ABC's Day One correspondent John McKenzie.

"…tighten controls on the gun trade in the United States and other member nations…"
---UN Disarmament Commission
