Well, I'm no going to go into the depth I usually go into on this subject at the moment, but I'll post some of it now.
Basically, what we've been taught thanks to science fiction is that life outside of earth is some tangible creature which is in one way or another, Humanoid. This is not at all true, in my belief.
"Life" can be classified as many different things. A spec of a creature which lived long ago, a small cap of ice deep in the core of mars, the Cell scrapings of some form of creature which died aeons ago on Pluto. Who knows. The possibly misconception that these creatures, look, speak, act, and think the way we do can be classified as:
A) Ignorance.
B) Religious Belief.
Just because human beings speak languages, does NOT mean other creatures would. The social convictions and values we hold true to on our planet in no way relates to how a creature from a planet on the other side of the universe exists. We're hung up on ourselves, thinking any form of life we come across has to basically: Walk, Talk, Breath a chemical, eat etc. This in no way needs to be true. The depths of the universe can be in no way fathomed. There are secrets to existence we have not yet unlocked. Forumals to mathematical problems we have not even pondered. Possibilities we simply cannot achieve while warring and bickering with each other like Dueling 1st Graders in the Sand Box. Life can be found in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps we simply are not using the correct attitude to find such evidence.
For example: It is a fact that the species known as the Dinosaur was killed off, many many millions of years ago. These creatures are dead, and can in no way provide any existence of their existence on their own, other than remains. This stops no one from disbelieving the fact that our planet was once roamed by massive creatures.
It could very well be the same situation for a planet such as mars. Though it has no possiblity for the support of human life, this does in now way precipitate that there is no possiblity for life whatsoever. Perhaps an entity in the universe hosts a body which does not need circulation, therefore does not "Breath?"
(I'll post more tomorrow.)

I watched a show a few years ago on this subject. They used a formula to estimate how many civilizations they could be at our level of technology. They figured there's about 100,000 of them out there with our tech base.
We're searching for other life by listen for radio signals, but have no idea which way to point the antena.
If we can get a comunications break through and develope something like Star Trek's subspace, then we might find something else. But, as was mentioned, probably not in our life time.
