$4000 towards car
I currently drive a 1995 Honda Civic CX and I have been saving up my money to buy a new car, but I've only come up with about $4000, so i thought I might as well just put that towards my current car. What do you guys think i should buy? Im looking for performance, so nothing like audio or anything. Also, keep in mind that I know next to nothing about cars so please state how the part would affect performance.
Thanks guys

well, lets go over what NOT to do....
NO FART CAN
NO ERECTOR-SET WING
NO STICKERS
NO NEONS
DON'T TAKE YOUR HUBCAPS OFF AND PRETEND THAT BLACK PLAIN-JANE WHEELS ARE COOL
DON'T PAINT YOUR HUBCAPS BLACK AND PRETEND THAT THEY LOOK GOOD
DON'T LOWER THE CAR SO THAT THE WHEELS HAVE 30* OF NEGATIVE CAMBER
ok, now that we have that cleared up....
Cold Air Intake- Allows colder air to be sucked up by the engine. Colder air=denser air=air w/ more oxygen=more power.
Exhaust Headers-Lets the exhaust flow more freely, which makes more power. Same with a Cat-Back system.
Now I don't know anything about Honda performance (those two words are a contradiction to me), but I do know that a turbo would definitely make you go faster. While it may cost $3,000+, you get tons of power.
My advice...look around for websites concerning the car, learn from them. Also, pick up a Summit catalog ( www.summitracing.com) and look in the Sport Compact section. That'll give you enough to spend your money on.

a turbo would be out of the question,he only has 4 grand and you cant put a turbo on a stock motor without throwing rods and seizing.first of all,is your car manual(stick) or automatic transmission?..if its auto matic dont put any money into it,sell it...if its stick,i suggest :
cold air intake
cat back exhaust or another after market exhaust which will only give you about 10 horsepower..the cat back would give you around 15-30 depending on which one.
headers-increase in slight bottom and top end hp.
a chip(computer chip, increases horsepower..the more you spend the faster you go.)
and if you can afford it,new pistons, rings, rods and valves.get your heads cut for higher compression and your block honed.

Sell the civic and combine that money with the $4K you have and go buy a Mustang GT or a Camaro Z28.

Those would have to be pretty crappy mustangs and Z28's...
It all depends on what you are looking for, is it speed? Gas saver? or just a fast car?
Sell your car hopefully youll get 1500 for your car. Its almost 10 years old, not sure what shape it is in....anyway combined that and your money thatll give ya around $5500. you can find a pretty decent car for 5.5K.
The fastest thing you can probably get would be an 1992 Eagle Talon AWD/ Eearly edition Eclipse and plymouth laser are pretty much all the same car. anyways...
Stock they run Talon AWD 6.7 (0-60) and a 15.1 1/4 mile, and the mistsubishi eclipse Mitsubishi 1990 Eclipse GSX run the same. You can find a decent one for about 3000-3500. Then you have 2.0K- 2.5K to use. Go to www.dsmtuners.com (they will show you how to get about 300 hp outa your car.
That would be one way to go. If your not a big fan of older muscle cars, and like the high tech computer cars. another thing you could do (which is what I would do) if you like the old muscle cars look for a...
Camaros are farley cheap. early to mid 90's or all the way down to the late 60's you can find a fast car for $5000.
Chargers are too much.
Nova and Elcaminos could work though those are boats, old mustangs can be farley easy to find for around $5000 also.
MY guess would be you might be able to find a 13 sec car for $5500.

Your 50/50 on this one, it depends on the condition of the engine. I had a 1990 Civic with a B18 non-Vtec engine w/ a turbo kit I put together and it only cost me $1,500 for the parts and $300-400 labor to do some fittings & installation. The engine had 50k miles on it but I never seized my pistons or damaged my rods. As long as your not boosting too high and you keep the engine well maintained it should hold up almost as long as a stock Civic. I do recommend upgrading the pistons and rods but it isn't necessary.
The down side to this is that you will never pass smog (so make sure you have a hook up on that) The engine will require very very high maintence, if you get pulled over and they inspect under your hood it's gonna cost you a lot of greif and money!
I recommend getting an engine swap, depending on the set-up it would be as fast or faster than turbocharging your current engine.
Like if you do an H22 Prelude Vtec engine swap it could put you in the mid to high 13s in the quarter mile but it's expensive, or you can do a CRV B20B Bottom end with a B18C1 or B18C5 head w/ the C5 pistons & Rods (also cost a grip) It all depends on what you want to do.........You can also do Nitrous which is cheap and could cause a lot of damage if you don't use it right & you could use the rest of your money to get rims, a nice clean body kit, and a new paint job. People have their opnions on body kits......I think their coo as long as you don't get out of hand with them. It's all preference on that subject.

about the turbos....
maybe I was assuming the engines were as strong as the 5.0's....people have some smallblocks that have 300k+ on them and are still running Vortechs and Paxtons, no problems.
Body kits go from tasteful to "Oh my god, WTF were you thinking!?". Make sure you go with the former.

LOL buy a Nissan Skyline GTR just add $85k to what you got.
or
You can copy and paste this into Ebay's search system "HONDA CIVIC 88-00 STG 2 TURBO KIT D15 D16"
It sells for $1,075.00 then you'll need piping which is $200.00 then installation $300-400 (cause they are going to weld a fitting to your oil pan) Then $150.00 for a Mitsubishi Starion Front Mount Intercooler. Then re-weld the end tanks should cost about $50.00 or you can buy one made for your Civic.....I seen some in the range of $300+

It's like this for all cars......they depreciate in value every second your driving.......You don't do it to make a profit, you do it as a lifestyle. The only way your gonna make a profit is if you buy the car dirt cheap and then fix it up tight. I made $1k on my Civic when I sold it (even sold it on Ebay) and I broke even when I sold my 240sx that I swapped out the engine for a JDM SR20DET. It's hard to make money on cars unless you buy them from Live Auctions.

swap a b18 motor and a nitrous kit, if all you want is speed. MSD ignition, exhaust, and wallha, your broke again. Now save up to build your motor, and possibly turbocharge it.

And may I add a set of Stage 3 Crower cams (or have the stocks grinded down to Crower's specs), Fuel pump (Good for Turbo & Nitrous applications), & don't forget to get the foggers tapped into the intake port.
