Cat5e
Ok, I am trying to set up my internet, so it will work and I was wondering what the correct setup is for the wires to put into the head. If you know what I am talking about, then any help would be great. There are eight wires with the colors: Orange, Green, Blue, Brown, Orange/White, Green/White, Blue/White, and Brown/White. If anyone could tell me what the correct way to put them in is, that would be awesome. Thanks.

you need one of thos weird wire to clip connector plier things. you have one? theyre expensive. i suggest just buying some cat5 cable from radio shack or something thats premade
but for the record, order doesnt really matter- just make sure they are in the exact same position on one end clip as they are on the other or youll A) have a unsent signal, or B) if you get them exactly opposite, youll have a reversed signal which wont work

Alright thanks alot, I already bought the cable, and have one done, but I'm not sure about the other. So, it doesnt matter what order they are in, as long as they are the same as the other side of the cable. Thanks again.

Ok, when in doubt. Go to a Radioshack, get a patch cable and look at the rj-11 jack, and then make yours and return the cable.
heh, dont tell them I told you
btw, you should look into a wireless router, they run about 50 bucks, and are really nice to not have cat5 run everywhere.

Starting from the left
White Orange
Orange
White Green
Blue
White Blue
Green
White Brown
Brown
do that on both heads and then use a tester to see if it works before you actually use it.
And it won't always work if you just put them in the same order becuase the wires are shielded to prevent agains magnetic flux and induced EMF.

the wires are all the same- copper enclosed in rubber. the wires as a whole are magnetically shielded, but any computer wires are because computers are sensitive to magnetic fields.
trust me, ive made plenty of workign cables, the order doesnt matter

yea i wouldnt use wireless, its less secure till you have the proper security and anyone smart enough can find your signal and hack into it and surf the intrnet from their car. . i myself use a linksys router.

What does it matter if someone else is using your internet. I have driven around with my laptop and my network stumbler and used internet quick just to recieve email. It doesn't hurt any body...plus if someone is so desperate for internet that they will sit in there car to use it then they might as well. Not like its gonna hurt me. I have a wep code on mine so its pretty tough to get on...most of my friends have open ones that anyone can use....my neighbor does too.

You're right, but only half right.
To create a working cable, no, the order does not matter. If the ends match up correctly, the cable will work. However, if you plan on using the cable on a network with several computers, you need to follow either the 568A or 568B standard, or you will experience network problems (collisions, lost packets, crosstalk, etc).
These problems may manifest themselves as critical errors (inability to browse the network), or something as simple as slightly slower transfer speeds.
Infinit, here's how they should be set up if you want to follow one of the 568 standards.
Trust me, Comp TIA says I know what I'm talking about.
