Depends on what you're going to do. Gaming? Go AMD. Business/video/everything else? Go Pentium.
Also, if you're going gaming, and you get either of those processors, remember, you're gonna need at least 512mb ram, and a damn good video card, so that you don't bottleneck the processor. With a good video card, I mean a 9800pro, x800, 6800, stuff like that. And a damn good mobo too.

it matters what your budget is.
i would either get a voodoo laptop(athlon64 or a pentium m)
as far as desktops go, AMD commands both ends. the athlong 64/FX are both faster then pentium's EE(emergency edition), as well as being cheaper and easier to find.
you can also find athlon 64's for around $200( www.newegg.com) and you can allways get an athlon XP which is still a solid competitor.
of course, im a little bit of a fan boy...
BZ, what outfit you get the laptop from?
also, its worth mentioning that if you get a laptop you might wanna look into the company's upgarde plans as some will upgrade processors and even Video cards(which any gamer knows is a huge step up).
some good botiques are:
www.alienware.com
www.voodoo.com
www.falcon-nw.com
www.ibuypower.com
www.hypersonicpc.com
www.cyberpower.com
and
www.abspc.com
mobos for the athlon 64:
nvidia nforce3(i may perfer ATI, but nvidia still makes damn good mobos) and some chipset made by VIA(i forgot the name)

No more talking for you.
"Get a radeon or geforce"
What the **** else is he gonna get, a voodoo 3?
"Get firewire"
Most motherboards come with firewire now...nt tho.
"I'm pretty good in pc's"

amd all the way
the A64 excells in gaming, and it beats or stays competative in everything but video and audio encoding which takes advantage of its Hyperthreading. plus the prescott core of the P4 runs extremely hot.
check out tomshardware.com for info

^^^exactly.
what chipset does it use.
i would sersiously promote one using an nforce 3 chipset...or basically any of them that get a good review at tom's hardware.
you might get more opinions if you go to a tech dedicated forum(i like the one at www.penny-arcade.com).
you might wanna save up and get mobo that supports the new PCI(PCI express i think?) but then you might need a new video card(do mobos come with both slots? are AGP and PCI-X compatable?)...those are questions you should go to a dedicated forum for, as im sure not many people know the answers.
what is your budget?
what brand do you have now?
what kind of memory?
what VGA do you have?
is your HD compatable with SATA(serial ATA)?
these are all answers that you will need answerd to get the correct mobo, just go to penny-arcade, list your rig specs, budget, and what you want. theyll help ya out.

as i said talk to the PA guys.
i wouldnt suggest getting an AGP mobo(because it will soon be outdated)...but i dont know if PCI-X and AGP ae compatible. i also dont know which mobos come with which kind of HD connectos and what kind you need(SATA, ATA, or scuzzie)
