Well what all is lost exactly? If it's really bad, like you can't even operate the comp, reinstall Windows. You may have to reformat & reinstall if that doesn't work. Maybe if you are more specific I can help you further, but right now that's all I can suggest, really.

Do a factory restore. You have to restart it with the disk in the computer you can't just put it in and expect it to run... I don't know why it wouldn't work... what windows are you using?

If it's a few programs like winzip or winamp or something you have to download them all over again

You're going to be better off re-installing windows. I'd advise against using the factory restore CD if you have a copy of the OS...they put a bunch of garbage on the restore CD's you really don't need, and a windows CD install will run better. Otherwise, they gave you the restore CD for a reason...might as well use it.

To get the install CD to work, you'll need to do one of two things: either go into BIOS and set the CD-ROM as the first boot device, or find a boot floppy disk. If you need one they included it with the computer, otherwise go to BIOS. To get into BIOS, turn the computer on. Most store-bought units will flash the company's logo, or it might show a bunch of information about memory and the CPU. Look at the bottom of the screen...it will say something like "press delete to enter setup" (it could be a F-key...F1, F2, etc above your number keys, or it might be tab or delete or backspace.) Press whatever key it tells you to. You'll now be in a simple menu system...scroll through the menus until you find boot order (don't change anything else...you could royally f*ck your computer up. If you think you did something wrong exit without saving and try again.) It will show something along the lines of First device: Floppy drive Second device :HDD-0, etc. You'll need to bump the CD-ROM to the second slot. Then exit saving changes (typically F-10) and put the disc in...it'll go through the boot cycle like normal, read the CD and it will probably say "press any key to boot from CD" (if you need a boot disk it will most likely ask you to do the same thing.)
