Medic, I'll be honest. You know what you are talking about. What I'm talking about is a very risky way to piss the cops off and maybe get out.
but like you said

It is a pretty sorry fact of life that the drunk is more likely to walk away from a crash then other casualties. Maybe medic could shed more light on it but I think it has to do with the alcohol in the drunks' system relaxing their muscles. Instead of tensing up right before the crash the drunk driver remains loose throughout the crash leading to less injuries.

the reason the drunks walk away is because they dont tense up their bodis (whiplash, anyone) when they collide, because they dont react fast enough to do so. Because their body is just a limp rag, it will do it's colliding with the seatbelt/windshield, etc, and then just go back to normal. When sober your body freezes, gets wicked tight, and when it hits the windshield the force of the stopping rips all your muscles and destroys your internals cause your body stopped instantly instead of crumpling up and slowing down first before hitting. Trust me its happened to me while stoned. The driver, who was sober and buckled, got major whiplash and couldnt walk the next day. The passenger, me, destroyed the windshield with my face, but other than a quick 14 stitches i was up and about doing my daily routine in half an hour
but whoever said more jailtime is necessarry for dui, that may not work. Face it, everyone you know doesnt want to drink and drive, they only do it if they have no other choice but get caught at a party, stay out later than mom wanted, etc. Because of this, theyll pretty much do it no matter what the consequences. Also, I just might add, the more propaganda that has been put out and laws that have been made against marijuana over the last 20 years, have encouraged a sharp rise in marijuana use. Not sure if it would do the same with alcohol but it seems like a related issue

I have to disagree. If the penalty for DUI is increased people would be more likely to call a cab or their parents and live with those consequences verses loosing their license for 5 years. At the least they would plan better so that they don't have to get into a DUI instance. (designated driver, staying at the party)
I don't have anything against weed, In fact I think it's a much better recreation drug then alcohol. The "Just say no" education program has really made a mess by Classifying weed as a horrible drug. The problem is that when kids try weed after being told how "evil" and addictive it is and realize that they were lied to. They then stupidly go on to try harder stuff (Crack, PCP, LSD, Coke, etc) because they think everything taught about those were lies too! People say that weed is a gateway drug. I say it is that way because of all the lies spread about how bad weed is! When talking to kids about drugs be honest about the effects of weed without romanticizing it.
