Im sorry i know nothing about real guns other than when you pull the trigger they go boom, but what does cocking the hammer do on a pistol?

well on old flintlocks, the hammer casued a spark when it struck the hammer plate, which in turn fired the gun

on revolvers the hammer either hits the back of the shell casing causing the bullet to fire, or it hits something, which then hits the shell casing

the hammer in a gun, in one way or another, us kept under spring pressure, When the trigger is bulled, just like a sear in a pball gun, the hammer is relased which hits the Fireing pin, which ignites the primer in the back of the shell (center fire) and makes the gun go boom

in semi-autos, Gas from the "boom" are reverted back around in the gun to recock the gun just like a block back pball gun. but there are new rifles like remingtons hunting rifle that use electronic impulses to fire the shell instead of a firing pin
