its from patchwindows.org, I personally wouldn't mess with it if you want the updates just go to microsoft.updates.com

ya i know its from that site. but it just seems kind of suspicious. since it had no link to the site, doesnt really seem like a real error message. and also it seems really vague

It's not a pop-up. It's Microsoft's crappy "Messenger service".
Here's how to get rid of it:
Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> Go down to Messenger and double click. Change the Startup Type to Disabled.
Basically Microsoft put that in so companies could advertise directly to your computer, without you having to be on a website to get a pop up. It's like a pop up but without you needing to go to any website.

that's microsoft? it still may be adware. you do know that adware is prepackaged with most if not all major computer manufacturers. they love to invade privacy (ever heard of wild tangent? yep, it's all adware. and it comes on all hp boxes whether you want it or not.)

Ok, well what I meant was it's Microsoft that allows it to happen. Microsoft is the one who came up with the Messenger service that basically invites other companies to advertise to you directly on your computer. Companies obviously take advantage of Microsoft's stupid idea and try to get you to click on their links, which probably will install adware.
But in the end it all comes back to Microsoft for promoting something like this. **** Microsoft.

I've always liked Linux, but I had trouble with the onboard LAN port when I ran Linux. I had a dual-boot (XP and Slackware), but now I'm back to just XP. I may install Xandros though.
