ok i need a new cell phone... now.... off ebay.....

i am on a cingular plan and i was wondering what is the deal with buying a cellphone off ebay and here are my questions

1. Do i have to take it to get it activated?

2. What do i do to get it to work?

3. What does it mean when it says its unlocked?

4. Does my SIM card go into the new phone?

5. What do i do with my old phone?

De-activate your old phone and sell it. Yes, you will have to get your new phone activated at the phones store. Once you got that it will work.

unlocked means it can be compatable with any service, i.e. a verison phone with cingular.

^^ exactly. the deal w/ your card depends totally on what kind of phone it is. go to the manufacturer's website and check on what type of card slot it has. even if the slots are compatible, it dosn't mean that both phones save the data to them in a way that it is interchangable.

I just bought a phone off ebay, just like your situation...so listen up.

1) Nope, as long as it is unlocked, you just put your old SIM card in it and you're literally good to go. (you'll have to set everything up though for like MMS, SMS, etc....)
2) Charge battery, put in SIM, turn ON.
3) Unlocked means it will work with any provider. Tmobile/ATT/Cingular/etc...
4) Yes.
5) Keep it for a while just in case...then sell it to a friend or off ebay.

Ask me anything else if you are confused...I'm a phone nerd.

EDIT - also, what phone you looking at? I'll let you know if its good or not.... And what are you expecting out of a phone?

depending on the old phone(if its really old or not) if you have a really old one that won't fetch much alot of companies will give you a car charger for the new phone for trade in. helps them recycle.
if its actually worth something you can sell it

eh I played around with the new lg its the what 8800 or 8900 its not even a flip phone but it still has the camera...was pretty cool..if I liked tiny phones with cameras that would be ok.

lgs are nice they work great.
