Computer Help

Okay, so I need some help with the ghey ass high speed University internet.

So I've been playing a lot of poker online to make a few extra bucks, and I've been bonus whoring to get some more money to play with. Bonus whoring is just taking any up any offers where you get a bonus for a deposit.

Anyway this involves downloading, installing, and playing lots of different poker programs. My problem is I have a HUGE problem connecting and keeping a steady connection to the program. This usually results in folded hands, and loss of money (which is not good).

I played at Pokerstars and e-mailed their support about it. They were very quick in their responce (an hour), and this is what I got:

Quote:
Hello Brady,

Please contact your network administrator and ask him to allow for ports
443 and 26002. You may also ask if there's a proxy server you can use,
please let us know to help you set the PokerStars software to use it.

Sometimes either a provider or a corporate firewall is blocking one of
these ports. You may be able to work around this by changing the port that
PokerStars' software uses from one to the other.

To do this, you will need to change a line in the text file USER.INI. You
will find this file in the PokerStars folder which is normally
found in the Program Files folder on your primary hard drive (Open My
Computer, C:>, Program Files, PokerStars).

Make sure you have closed the PokerStars program. Load USER.INI into
Notepad or your favorite text editor . If there is not a [Connect]
section, add one, followed by the userport line with the port number.

Here is how the [Connect] section should look after your modifications:

[Connect]
userport=443

If none of these options are available, you may also consider getting your
self a regular ISP so you bypass the on campus network and don't have to
deal with that Firewall.

Please let us know if you require further assistance.

Regards,

Erick
PokerStars Support Team
I did that part that's in red. It worked great, haven't had a disconnect or slow connecton since.

So I'm assuming all poker software has these same problems. Is there anything I can do to fix my problem for all the programs? I've tried disabling my firewall, and opening up suggested ports, but nothing worked. I don't know **** when it comes to networking, ports, firewalls or whatever all that crap is. I know it's not the speed of my connection (refer to my sig, it's always like that).

Unfortunately, no other support has even responded to my e-mails. Pokerstars is the only one. I've been waiting days for responces from other sites.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Make sure you aren't running a lot of programs in the background. Messenger or Limewire/kazzaa etc.

It's not that. Trust me. I don't run that stuff anymore anyway. Look at what I did in the red. It worked wonders. I'm not sure what it means, but it worked.

You changed a part of the code in the "user.ini" file, all you need to do is find the file that's similar to this one in all the other games/applications you want to work like this one. Find the file that holds the internet settings, open it up, and change the port it's directed to... should be as simple as that (but finding the files might be difficult).

Ya, I've tired that, and I've found files like serverconnection.dll

How the eff do you work with a DLL file. Is it even safe to do so?

You could also change your game's to connect throug ha port that isnt blocked by your campus's firewall like your email program used by the University that it recognizes

You can work with a dll file... just make sure you make a copy of the original, so you can always revert to it if you mess up. Dll files should be pretty simlilar to the ini file you worked with.

what you did is simply modified one of the programs configuration files to allow the program to connect to a different port(like a way in, a door). this allows you to get a connection that will bypass the schools firewall system(sortof). the firewall is set up to scan and/or block the port that the program is automaticly set up to use. so, change the port and u connect. you may want to check the options or configuration sections of the other programs that deal with how it connects. dll files are safe to work with(to an extent), just save a backup copy in case you screw it up. if you read and infer what the file is saying you can figure it out fairly easily. generaly this info that you are wanting to change may be found in a .ini file or .cfg file rather than a .dll. but it may be in any of them, or none of them.

Ok, so 2 questions regarding BunkerMonkey, and Infinit's posts:

1. How do I find out what port will work?

2. I opened a DLL file in wordpad, and it was basically a bunch of squares for pages and pages, and every once in a while a recognizable word. The INI file I worked with was about a page, and not confusing at all. What gives?

Just wondering... what program/s is/are you wanting to get on the internet, I might have some of them. The most likely port to work would be '443' like eric told you, are there no ini files, those are essentially easier to work with, if not I'm not really sure what to do. Cfg files are one of the ones you can use as well. The difference is the coding in different files, they read differently, obviously the ini being the easier one to work with, if possible, go with that.

Right now I'm trying to use Pokerroom (www.pokerroom.com), but everything is in DLL files.

I've also tired installing other programs, but the actual setup is downloading the files, and they aren't able to connect to download anything.

dll files tend to be in machine language. thus .cfg and .ini files.
