damn press is so against the government. they are the main cause of dissention and what not. they're turning the military into such a political beuracracy that its totally screwing the entire purpose of the military.

this is why we have deaths every day in iraq, because we have to be careful not to hurt anyone on the other side. Call me cold hearted, but id much rather some iraqi kid get killed than one of our US soldiers or allies

We're the "liberating" army. Honestly, we should be acting in a better way. I mean, come on Alpha, you know about the marines... you think "putting a civilian out of his misery" is part of the RoE. Even doctors can't kill somebody out of mercy... remember the big issue with assisted suicide?

As for if it were the other way around, again, liberating army... we're allegedly going in with a certian sense of decency. It sucks, but live with it.

Because the U.S. is the only place in the world where people sue eachother. I don't think any other country has suits filed from person to person. Oh yeah, and they're not a democracy to boot.

Oh yeah, and in general, people aroudn there don't take it as hard. In the book I was reading, there was a part where some soldiers opened up on a truck whent hey were gaurding a bridge in Iraq. When they approached, there were two men alive, and a girl sleeping in the back. When they picked up the girl, the whole top of her head fell off... One guy was the father, he just picked her up and walked away.

I'm NOT saying this to bash the army, the truck didnt' stop, so it warrented being shot at. It's just an example of the different mentallity.

I ****ing hate the military's ROE. Seriously, you almost have to be wounded to fire back. It's bull****. When you join, you're trained to kill. It's your point in war. They hand you a rifle, give you some ammo, and wish you Godspeed and good luck. Now we're jailing our own soldiers for doing what he was trained to do? So what if the guy was unarmed, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had he been that wounded soldier, he would have been murdered brutally. I think it's about time to change our RoE so our soldiers aren't at such a disadvantage.

And people wonder why we have 1,500 dead soldiers...thank our RoE.

The RoE is pretty lame... But we can't forget about our helicopter crashes... so the RoE can't be the reason for all 1,500. Anyways, the point of the RoE is for public relations. You think other nations would back us if they saw dead civilians and children all over the street. The RoE are decent, but not for the setting they're in right now. It's hard to distinguish soldier from civilian, which is what makes the RoE so unreasonable. It sucks, but again... public relations. It can't be us vs. the world.

And I just read that article a little closer... the whole conspiracy to murder with 2 other soldiers... THAT'S not ok. You go to federal for 25-life here for that. 3 years has him getting off easy in comparison.

There's a difference in backing us, and not being hostile towards us. Like, if there were dead civilians and kids... we're not doing a good job of "liberating" those people. This war is a PR campaign, so we're trying to make it look like we're going in with dignity. If other nations saw some nasty atrocities... they may go from neutral, to oppossed... which is the last thing we need.

People back Iraq and they're breaking international RoE. It is a rule of war that all soldiers MUST be in uniform when fighting. That happen in Iraq? Hell no. This is unconventional warfare, we need unconventional RoE. I may sound like a coldhearted bastard, but I don't give a **** about the people in Iraq right now. Any one of them are potential enemies. All of them could be dangerous. The woman feeding her kid could be a suicide bomber. The guy reaching down to grab something could be grabbing an RPG or AK-47. I don't think we can take chances. I would say go back to the shoot first ask questions later mentality, but that won't get us very far. I think our priorities should be on allowing soldiers a better opportunity to live because they can fight back, not allowing possible terrorists to live longer because our RoE sucks.

How the **** is this close to Vietnam? Rules of Engagement? That's about it. Maybe guerilla warfare, but that's the only other thing. Iraq will NEVER claim 58,000 United States Soldiers lives. The government won't let it happen. We also did not have full air superority in Nam, we do not have a draft...I could go on.
