How strong are the goggles ?
Does anybody have any idea what these goggles are tested up to ?
I saw a paintball go through a paint canister top when the guy was bent over - and the paintball went straight through the plastic.
Next logical thought process led me to wonder how strong are the goggles ? How much of an impact will the goggles withstand ?
Food for thought.

people are shot in the goggles tons of times, take a look at facefull magazine, usually if goggles are faulty a recall is the solution, than they send out better ones

Goggles can only take hits at close range at or around 300fps safely. Make sure that you chrono your markers before you play to insure you are shooting at a safe speed. Lenses are strong don't worry.

They're safe to 300 fps, but I believe they're tested at speeds of upwards of 500 fps. I could be wrong though. But they'll hold up, for sure.

If you do get shot in the face at close range. (1-10 feet away) You should probably replace the lense.
Even if there's no cracks. Just to be safe.

Thanks for the info.
Since you already answered me without knowing the type of goggles, I will ignore the first part of your statement. Since you throw back a blanket statement that takes very little insight to answer I will ignore the second part of your statement.
The reason I am sitting here thinking about it is that the stakes are pretty high - considering I cannot hear very well and need my eyes. The plastic cover on the paintholder is three times as thick as any lens I have seen - so it raises some concern. Everyone who saw the paintball go through the paintholder was swallowing hard and looking worried. Why wait until someone loses an eye to think about it.
I am going to take an old mask out to my cabin this weekend and test it. I will turn the gun up as high as it will go and try to break the lens on my old mask. The basic mask that comes with a custom 98 package. They seem cheap and poorly designed. I will post on Monday and let folks know how it went.
Thanks ,
C

Your eyes are safe if you wear goggles. The lenses are not made of the same plastic that the pod you saw get shot through was made from so the thickness really doesn't matter.
Another example... Give me a board that's an inch thick and I can break it with a single punch. Give me a piece of steel a quarter of that thickness and see if I can punch through it. Yeah right. Just because it busted the pod doesn't mean it would bust the goggle lens.
The pod was made of plastic, and I'm taking this directly from this site http://www.rrpb.com/about.html
"Paintball goggles are mainly made of a semi-ridged plastic with a single Lexan lens."
Lexan is the stuff that bulletproof glass is made from.
YOUR EYES ARE SAFE. You will be fine.

You must relieze. That turning your gun all the way up and then seeing if it will break your lenses is no good. When you play at an organized field, everyone is chronographed. That means everyone is shooting at a safe speed. You don't have to worry about the paintballs breaking your lenses then.
If you are worried i'd suggest going out and buying a new pair or goggles, a nice pair. Pick up a pro-flex, invision, or profiler. You'll find that you will feel much safer in a new mask then your two year old cheap tippmann mask. But either way all paintball lenses are made to the same standard, just dont base everything on one expierence.

Paintball masks can withstand a shotgun blast at close range. Considering the shotgun they used probably was firing at a muzzle velocity around 6-700 feet per second, I think your more then safe. You know how the military tests their ammunition cases? They heat them up to over 150 degrees, then cool them to 100 below, then put them in a chamber of tremendous pressure and see if its still good. Paintball masks are tested the same way. Velocities are capped in fields at 280, and anyone shooting over that will be warned/and or kicked out.
You have nothign to worry about. I don't think there was ever a paintball related injury that wasn't caused by misuse. I've heard stories of 11 year old kids installing hteir own anti-syphon kits and killing their mother, or of people who play without masks and get shot in the eye and can't open their eye for a few weeks.
If you wear your mask, adn have your barrel plugs in when your not wearing masks, there is NOTHING that you need worry about.

Excellent post - thanks for the info. I suspected that it may be a different plastic compound, but have never heard anything about it.
Precisely the reason I asked the question.
Thank you for the reply.

They're designed to take multiple hits at close range, way over 300fps. Wearing it incorrectly is probably the stupidest thing you can do. The lens will definitely hold, the other places are probably your worst concern, although those are tested to a very high standard too.
