I would go for the imagine if you are just starting up, you can find them for as cheap as $120,spend $64 on a t-board and it will shoot as fast as both plus it comes with break beam eyes, my friend just put a t-board in his and it rips. Spyders are also really low maintenance guns.

I'd think an ION is a bit too much for a beginner to start out with. Go low-end and mech, then buy upgrades and play. Once your playing skills are decent save up for a better gun, possiably electro.

Now are you a first time beginner? If no then an ION may be right for you, but for him i'd say it's a bit too much. When we all started it we all learned our do's and dont's. It happens once in a while when a beginner drops their marker, and since their just starting out scratches, marks, dents, all that will start happening to the gun. But once he has decent skills he'll be able to use a marker without getting it damaged or anything.
He'll most likey try taking it apart to be curious how it all works, then losing parts and needing to buy them and all. Then things break on him and he doesn't have a clue on how to fix it, so more money there at a proshop. I'm just saying it'd be easier if he got something low-end that he could work on and take aprat to learn all the different parts on it.

Ion =yes
DO NOT buy a POS trilogy cocker. the only reason i could ever see wanting one is if you wanted to put an e-blade on it with the bracket they released......

Reviews on both the Ion and the Wrath are great for their price. Most people are looking at the Wrath as just another electro spyder clone, it’s not totally true! Take a Timmy for instance, or rather most higher end markers for that matter. Most of them are similar to spyders, very similar, but that doesn’t stop people from dropping $1000+ on them does it?
If I had to pick between the Wrath and the Ion, I would rather have the Ion just because of the so called body kits coming out for scenario ball, and it’s size is so small. Then again, getting the wrath doesn’t require you do deal with Smart Parts, which now a days most people would rather not deal with them. Doesn’t bother myself either way.
Wrath is apparently faster and capped at 20bps
Ion is slower but cooler looking and capped at 16 bps
Either choice is good, so good luck!
