Dumb On/Off Valve question

I currently use a 20 oz. Co2 tank with an on/off valve, and my question is:

Can i turn off the tank and fire the remaining Co2 left in the line to the ASA to release the pressure so it's easier to unscrew?

The only reason i ask is because i had read another thread that mentioned that it might do harm to the gun. I don't see why this would be true. I just want to be cautious. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question.

buying a on/off w/ bleed is also a good move. It vents the pressure making it even easier to unscrew.

Since I'm a complete n00b to paintball I just do rentals. But the one thing that really scares me about paintball is the tank, I don't know anything about it except when its low thanks to that little guage. I'm thinking about one but I'm sorta paranoid that I'd mistreat the tank without even knowing how and it would blow up on me @_@

Ya I am an uber n00b but at least I listen to players before trying anything. I'm a good n00b i guess ^_^
