Will you be playing woodsball or speedball. The Ion cost more and you should really use nitro/HPA on it and a feed hopper would really help. So thats added cost right there. Ions need more maintaince, Tippmanns are industructible.
It really depends on what you want.

I would say a 98 custom to start out with right now. Save up and buy a hpa tank then a hopper over time. Then just get the ion in a years time or so after playing the 98.

umm...Ion by far..you can use the ion for woods if you have it like a black body kit or something like that...the ion is WAY better than the tippman..Any tippman...You would however need Compressed Air ( nitro) and a hopper ( egg or halo etc ) but yea ion by far..

my first gun was the ion, i maintain it fairly well after asking questions, using the search, and reading the manual 8 times. its a good gun to use in the woods which is the first game i played, and its perfect for speedball too just get a clamping feedneck cause the ions feedneck isnt that great and i shouldve bought one right when i got my ion

DON'T get an ion.
1. Ions are not a good first gun for a player to have
2. You need HPA to run ions
3. You should have a fast/agiated hopper with the ion.
Now for the tippy.
1.Amazing woodsball gun and starter.
2.You can run it with co2 without a problem.
3.Gravity fed hoppers are fine with this.
TIPPMANN all the way!

Get a Tippmann, they are great guns for people to start out with and they are tough as nails. You can also up them quite a bit, and make them shoot much faster without spending 1000+$ on a high end.

Oh come on I hate when people say you shouldnt get a very high end gun for your first gun. Get the ION if you have the money. Chances are, if you get the tippmann, you will want the ION after a few weeks. Get the ION, get a HP tank, and get an electric hopper. Dont waste your money on a Tippmann unless your strickly playing woodsball. And you dont need a camo or military looking gun to play woodsball so you can use the ION... Just get the ION

Lets see.. Ion has a Reg and Eyes. Already ahead of the game. Don't see why you can't use a gravity hopper on it either.. It has eyes. : ) You'll want HPA for your Tippy anyways so just get the Ion or consider the Odysey RPM.. Never shot one but it's decently priced and has nice features. Course Odysey can't even make a website.. Anyways I like my Ion. Disliked my Tippy. At least get a gun with a regulator.

I agree with cockerkid, go with the tippy. Ions aren't a good beginner gun WHEN COMPARED TO TIPPMANNS and this is why:
Tippmanns are indestructible, extraordinarily easy to maintain, easy to upgrade, and will shoot just about anything you put in it.
Ions have plastic shells, are harder to maintian than tippmanns, easy to upgrade, more selective on paint, and much more expensive. Good Tippy set up would cost maybe $180, $300 with a electric hopper and cheap N2. The ion GUN costs $300, plus another $150 for a cheap N2 tank and a hopper to keep up. Tippys get you into the sport until you are ready to make a larger investment and commitment. Ions get you into the sport after spending a small fortune.

get the tippmann. i'm not a huge fan on tippy's but there indestructable. if i owned a tippmann i'd have no problem dropping it on the ground or not cleaning it as much. well nevermind on the cleaning part. but anywayz get the tippy and save up some cash for a good hpa system and a fast hopper, then when your ready make the switch to a high end marker

Go to a paintball store. Ask the guy to field strip a tippy. And a Piranha.. Then make your decision.. Tippy = little parts flying everywhere.

I would have to go with the Ion. It's better and I personally like the looks of it much better.
