No one except really really new players use them somtimes. They are embarrassing, and awkward. Sometimes females use them to protect breast, as they are usually more vulnerable.
They work by, ya know, same way and extra layer of clothing works, just more padding. They increase the time of impact, therefore reducing the amount of force (impulse).

Thats a nice little Physics lesson there baur. Think of it this way, airbags and seat belts are there to reduce the chance of injury if your in a car wreck. Guess what? Its still going to hurt.
But after you play a while paintballs tend to not hurt anyway.

I have a similar question about the elbow/forearm pads. I was thinking of getting some just because I was playing woodsball last weekend in a t-shirt and my arms got all scratched up on branches/thorns. Do alot of people not use those either?

People don't generally use arm pads except in tournament play where every bounce can make a huge difference.

I know that knee pads definitely come in handy. I would highly recommend those to anyone.

I think elbow and knee pads can help at times in speedball when your running around and diving/sliding into bunkers and all that...

I dont really play woodsball anymore, but when I did elbow and knee pads would have come in handy. Now I play speedball and I hate playing without elbow and knee pads. I would say that elbow pads are more important than knee pads. Some would disagree, but if your a decent speedballer, you wont be doing a ton of knee slides anyway. When you dive or slide, your elbows are much more likely to get scraped up, once again unless your sliding on your knees. And, your arms (once again, if your a decent speedballer) are alot more likely to be hit than your knees, which again places more importance on elbow pads because you can catch quite a few bounces off the pads.
