Most people wear atleast a jersey.
The biggest reason is bounce, and the added protection that they give you when yuo do things such as slide, superman, and other common paintball moves. Since most jerseys and pants are baggy, they have a better tendency to have the paintball hit it, and harmlessley bounce off, in which case, you are not out.
If you do wear normal clothes, go for a baggy long sleeved shirt, and some baggie full length pants. And nothing that you will be upset if it gets torn/holes worn into it.

You will look like a noob. Some people just wear paintball pants and a long sleeve shirt, that nothing uncommon to see. Jersies add bounce as well as protection. Pants have a lot of padding for diving and for getting bounces also. I wear an undershirt and jersey when i play, or sometime just an undershirt. I always wear paintball pants. I wear 06 evils.

i prefer wearing my paintball pants with like a long sleeve t-shirt with a short sleeved t-shirt over, i find that more comfortable than a jersey, besides jerseys are...well...dang what happened to the "whats hot" thread

You'll be fine.
My Angel jersey is really thin and probably less protective than any long sleeve shirt. But it has mesh for airflow and is really light weight material. I wear a shirt under it.
Pants have at minimum double cloth knees and stuff for slides and falls. They're baggy to try and cause bounces as well.
Honestly, if you're new don't feel the need to throw down your money for special clothes. A kid I know only plays in shorts and a T-shirt. Even in the woods.
Wear some baggy light pants and some shirt, long sleeve if you want. Maybe a hat to keep paint out of your hair and offer a little head protection.

I play woodsball so i wear BDU Digi Camo Pants (they are pretty baggy compared to the jeans i wear) and then a Long Sleve Digi camo shirt until i get my new BDU Digi camo which will be kinda baggy. Then my Scenario Vest.
But somtimes when i play speedball i like to wear the Pants with Black Longe Sleeve UnderArmor and a T-Shirt.

I found that if you don't have paintball pants, a pair of sweatpants with jeans underneath works VERY well and doesn't look half bad either. As for a shirt, I wear my long-sleeved underarmor shirt and a T-shirt over it most of the time. Don't worry about looking like a newb, just don't play like one. lol
