i was just wondering whether or not barrel length affects velocity enough that i should just be looking at a 16 in. barrel instead of an 18 or 20 in. barrel?

Yes, it does. Basically, just don't get a barrel longer than 16in. and not under 12in. I like 14in. and 16in. the best for any style of play.
