c02 tank/gun maintenance
hey guys, i just got my first paintball gear and i'm wondering exactly how to care for my stuff...
my understanding is that you should put a few drops of paintball gun oil into the air hole on the gun, a drop on the cylinder valve as well, and then attatch the c02 and fire of a few shots to spread the oil around.
well, a guy at the field told me just 1 drop to lube up the cylinder valve.. while i've read around here that you should put like 4-6 drops right in the hole.. so..
could anyone clarify the proper starting and ending gun/tank maintenance rituals you should do to keep everything going good? when do i know my gun needs a cleaning, or internal parts/orings need lubrication? my gun is a tippmann x7.
oh, the manual says the velocity screw should be all the way in before disassembly(which i figure u would do to clean and oil all the internals).. all the way in means the velocity is as low as it can go, right?
another thing... how can i measure the velocity of my gun? i know at the field they have those sensor things that track the balls feet per sec..but if i want to go play woodsball?
and what is the optimal speed it should be set at anyways? 300fps? i know at the indoor fields they limit it to like 220-300fps..but woodsball is usually in a much larger play area.. so what fps should it be set at for that?
also, about the c02 tank.. i know it can be pretty dangerous so i'm wondering what is the proper way to handle it, store it, inspect it..etc. what are some things i should look out for that could indicate a faulty tank? i have a 12oz pure energy tank by the way.
well thats all the concerns i have at the moment
any help would be appreciated

Okay, to oil this gun, put 3-4 drops of oil in the bottomline (air hole), screw in the tank (you might want to put a drop of oil on your finger, then rub it around the o ring to keep it from breaking), then fire. To measure the velocity of the gun, you are probably gonna need a chrono (those sensor things) I'm sure you could do it by timing the distance then using some formula, but that would be very difficult. I would just buy a hand held Chrono for like 50-80 bucks. As for a good velocity set, I would put it at 280 that's what most fields reccomend.

Also read your manual over and over untill you completly understand it. It will give you the manufacturers cleaning and oil recommendations as each marker can be slightly different. Do not start taking your marker apart until you completly understand it as this will help you for making mistakes in the disassembly and reassembly of you marker
Play safe and have fun!!!

ya on the Co2 tank question..keep it out of the heat. Co2 is a liquid which turns into a gas when you fire it. in really hot days you may see some really strange chrono numbers but thats usually what happens.
be sure to keep the threads cleaned ( gun oil and have a nipple cover there like ten cents ) when you remove the Co2 tank it sprays that Co2 unless u dry fire it for a few shots so it doesn't do that. if it does, which is totally normal, keep a lot of spare O-Rings with you because Co2 freezes and shrinks the rubber.
and ya Read the manual! it tells you everything and since i have no experience with the new tippmanns i can't really give you any real experienced information. Just when maintaining your marker be sure to take your time and be careful with the parts, don't wanna go losing a spring or screw...and the long calls to tippmann tech support to send another one.
any questions don't be afraid to ask!

Do it after playing or while you're doing your other cleaning.
If you do it before playing it might end up slicking the barrel with oil spray which can have some interesting effects on the normally straight path of a paintball.
It isn't in the manual to oil that way, but it is common practice and works well.
