i read in another post about someone shortening a macro
why would you do that, what performance aspect does it increase

When somebody buys a new macroline, it is generally long. So when they put the macro on the gun it is all long and curvy, which gets in the way, and looks horrible. People cut them down to the appropriate length, to get them out of the way, and so it doesn't look so stupid.

If hes shortening the stock line, he probably put a drop on it, or his was long and "bowed". You would shorten the line if you needed to for cosmetic reasons, or if it was binding

Mostly aesthetics. If it's improperly bent, as in it's kinked not bent, then there's more stress on it and it will be more likely to blow.
