Well, you wont NEED a new gun for a while, maybe like 10 years if you play your cards right. However, alot of people spend maybe 2 years, hell, i have a friend who is the biggest gun whore. He has had like 60 some markers in the last 2 years.
I usaully buy a new gun every two years because i keep slowly upgrading, but im sure i could keep my ION running for another 3 or 4 years. Yo also got to keep in mind parts to replace ones that wear out.

He just buys one gun and trades you know? Its like this..
Buys EGO
Trades EGO for DM6
Trades DM6 for a PM6 and a ION
Trades PM6 For 2 IONs and trades ION for Promaster
Trades all his guns for a shocker
Trades shocker for Cyborg
Trades Cyborg for timmy
Trades timmy for Angel
Trades Angel for DM6...
Its like that, he deosnt have all of them at the same time.

I wanted a new gun probably about a month or so after I got my tes(spyder clone). I saw the guys at the field with their dm4's and timmys and started to find all the things that were bad about my gun. After about a year and a half I ordered my matrix and have played with it for the last year and a half or so. I will occasionally look at a new gun but i am happy with my matrix and cannot justify dropping another 500 into paintball for the 20 or so times a year that i go. [/lifestory]
I really would not suggest getting a 500 dollar gun right off the bat, it may seem more cost effective but there are a couple major drawbacks. The first is that you may stop liking paintball and a gun that costs 500 will lose value very quickly as most all guns do. The second is that you may not be ready to get a fancy gun and run the possibillity of breaking it.
The last thing is that you mentionet getting a large tank. For tanks bigger is not better, get a 68ci or 45ci 4500psi tank. The reason behind this is that larger tanks such as a 90ci tank ar every long and heavy making the setup uncomfortable.

Hey, I had a TES too
So far, everytime I've gotten a new gun, there's only been a little bit of a step up from each one. From a VL Triad to a TES, the only thing I gained was an E-trigger. From that TES to an Ion, with the upgrades I had on the TES, it really wasn't an upgrade. And from the Ion to an Eblade Cocker (I hope), which isn't much of a step-up.
So, I guess it'd be better to try and improve a little more with each new gun you buy. I've only been playing a little over a year, and I've had about 4 guns, I should have deffinitley kept that TES and played mroe instead of selling it and buying an Ion.
edit: GRANTED, I don't play to do tourneys and stuff, I'm just play casually for fun. I'm getting the Cocker because it will be something fun to tinker with, and I've always dreamed of having a Cocker. It will probably also be my last gun.

Mostly a marker is based off of your preferences for what you want out of it. Whether it be size, looks, weight, shootability, or even easy to take apart, if you love single tubed markers because you had an ION say for a long time, then you try and shoot a larger marker such as a DM it will be like starting over again because of the difference in maintaning and feel and how it shoots. [/endboringinfo]
But i had a Spyder for about a year when i realized it didn't fit my playstyle, so i upgraded to an Ion and minus the hard time to turn it on before matches i flat out love it, fast, accurate, and relatively easy to clean and keep maintained. I know that in the next year i'll be making my final marker purchase of a PM6 or a DM6 ( since they'll be much cheaper by then and especially used )
But in all honesty if you love the sport, that marker will last you 1 - 2 years before you make a major jump or a mid end range jump to another marker. But if you plan to do that try shooting the markers before buying (im in the process of that right now testing Shockers and Timmies atm )

That was the E-tippman correct?
This is going to be a touchy subject. In theory, you don't HAVE to upgrade. I carried an automag classic into games for nearly 10 years before I upgraded. The time will probably come when you decide the gun either isn't fiting your style of play, isnt comfortable for you to hold, or in someway isnt making you happy anymore. At that point, it's time to ask yourself "Would upgrading to XX gun make me happy, will it solve these problems?". If you can justify a yes to that question, and can justify spending the money, it's time to upgrade.
I am going to give you a piece of advice. Don't get caught up in the upgrade, gun whore, BS ame alot of people are playing and try to justify it as necessity. If you want to buy/sell/trade guns constantly, thats your choice, but it is NOT necessary to constantly follow the market trend and have a new gun every week, month, or even year.

you'll WANT to upgrade fairly quickly. But you're funds may not be up to par with your wants.
98c will not last you if you want to be a serios player.
If you have the money to get a nice $700+ gun, go for it.
