Help yet another Newb. Please
OK, here's the deal. My brother just got a paintball gun for his birthday (he bought it for himself). I don't know what model it is but the company I beleive is called Tippman. Anyways, money is tight for me and I would like to get one also. With the tax return I should have enough to get a nice one. Now I'm not going to be entering any tournaments and I don't need a $1000 gun. I was just wondering (since I have no clue on this subject) what I could get for around $300. I'm sure that there are a lot of people that started with something cheap and moved on up over time. I just don't wan to go to Walmart and pick up a gun for $30. I'd rather invest some money and get something that I can use for years to come.
My brother has a few friends as do I, that have guns already. We wouldn't be playing that often and it would be in open fields, not deep wooded cover. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated and helpful. Tanks.

Well a Spyder will get you started you can find a good deal for one on Action village Adding the other gear needed is not the expensive either
But An Ion is also a good gun if you want to spend a little more. You can get every thing you need here

HPA stands for High Pressure Air and is some times called a Nitro system because the first ones used Nitrogen gas.
Cross fire is a good one to look into but the tanks cost 150+ depending on the size. most tanks are called by the size then the pressure rating. so for example a 48/30 is a tank that has 48 Cubic inchs of volume and is rated to 3000 PSI.

HPA Q&A
tanks can be had for around 75 used for cheap ones. One, IMO, advantage to HPA is the easy and inexpensivness of setting up your own fill gear. I bought a scuba tank and station for 170$ this winter, and i can fill my own tank and a buddies all day out of my truck with it. CO2 requires a tank rental etc.
read the sticky and youll understand a bit more.
If you want a milsim marker, look into the AGD tac-one. There excellent guns(probably the only thing tougher than a tippman), and are designed with upgradability in mind(they can, for a little bit of cash, become electronic guns just as fast as any other tourny gun, and the bolt ons are easy to remove if you start playing speedball.
My advice would be to buy a classic mag valve, a tac one and rail, and your choice of trigger frame. That could be had new sub 300$ i think, and would be a great place to start.
Look at automags.org
tunamart.com
and airgun.com

I wouldnt buy it just because it locks you into a gun for scenario style play. That thing isnt useful in the least in a speedball game, and you might be suprised how much you enjoy it.
If you not interested in the tac ones, my suggestion is to pickup a cheap spyder pilot and play for a while. Go to a field and play some tourny style ball, then play in the woods and make SHURE thats what you want. THEN get a milsim marker.

I understand that it is ment for a specific type of situation but I will only be using it every few weeks or maybe on nice weekends and only with my friends in their backyards. If I was seriously thinking about competition I would definetly look at others because of there size and features but again, it's just a fun thing to do with the guys. Aside from being a replica type does it have any good or key features?

Its based loosley on a tippman 98 i beleive. All it is is a fancy stock and barrel stuck on a normal gun. you could probably pick up a 98 with those addons used for 1/2 or less than what the bt-4 costs.

Thanks. Maybe I'll look into a 98. Are there a lot of used guns out there? I haven't even really thought about it. Thanks again.

The used market is HUGE. you wont have trouble finding a decent deal used on the forums. If its ebay....eh ask here first , we have no vested interest in seeing you pay more for it

good reliable marker is an A-5. They are solid markers. They operate well on C02 and if you shop around you can find one as a players pack, with C02 tank, mask, and other small parts for about 300 bucks.

I would suggest getting a Tippman 98, VL Revolution, and with whatever money you have left over, a HPA tank. I'd suggest getting the 98 used, since there's not much risk of anything being wrong with it. The hopper there's a little bit more risk if buying used, just make sure the seller gives you pics to make sure the shell isn't cracked and has some decent feedback. The HPA tank you could buy used, just check to make sure it's still within hyrdo and preferably comes with a cover, especially if it's carbon fiber/fiber glass.

OK, so if I do end up getting one I think that this is what I'll do.
Tippmann A-5 Paintball Gun - Black
Tippmann Sniper Barrel A-5 Barrel - 14 Inch
I guess I can get other stuff when I need it. Actually I don't think that I will need anything else. I'm going to talk to the wife and see tonight. Maybe I can get one in a little while. It's still winter so I have time.

Dont buy anything labelled "sniper barrel"
do some research about what makes a good barrel....
Again, the A% is way overpriced but its your $$

Wait, so Air and Nitrogen in terms of paintball propellant are the same thing?

He's new to the sport and most likly not going to jump up to HPA right away.
I'll say you should go with the Tippmann A-5, and 20 ounce CO2 tank, and a nice 14 in. barrel. You'll be set to shoot up your bro all day long, and the gun is going to last a long time. Another good thing about Tippmanns is that every place that knows paintball can fix them.
