Clothing Types: Their uses and when to use them?
ok, ive never paintballed before(done some airsoft) and i would like some information about clothing:
1. Gloves: Ive seen quite a few pics of guys, most ive seen wear gloves with the fingers cut off. do you think gloves are useful? what game types are they most useful for(im guessing woodsball and stuff)?
2. Pads: in most of the pics ive seen, not many people wear pads, so im guessing that you dont really need them. but, since im interested in woodsball more than anything else, do you think they would be more useful here? or do you think they will restrict movement too much? and what gametypes do you think they are most useful for, if they are useful at all.
3. Shirts: i heard that you usually want to wear thicker shirts/layers so that the paintballs dont hurt as much. 2 long-sleeve shirts should be enough right?
4. Pants: jeans should be fine, right?
5. Shoes: should i just wear tennis shoes or boots or something else? especially for woodsball?

If you are a first timer just where:a shirt, sweather, gloves aren't really needed, but if you can stand pain I wouldn't bother, jeans, old shoes.

well the gloves i think are worn because your hand doesnt have much fat on it and when it gets hit it hurts pretty bad and bruises faster and more. my friend played and he got hit in the hand 3 times somehow, anyways his hand looked gross and was bleeding which nobody else hits ever bled. it is about standing pain and if you wanna have bruises whether it be showing the bruises off or not.

Yea, soft pads are common on knees and elbows. They're just under the clothes.
They don't restrict moving much at all, and the comfort is worth it.
I wear boots in the woods. Mostly just because of the support if I get into some branches or something that might hurt my ankles if I slip and also for the coverage if I encounter mud. Staying dry is good.
I also have gloves because hand hits sting a little. Fingers hits, mostly.
Do you need any of this? Nope, not at all. I've seen plenty of kids come out to play wearing shorts and T-shirts into the woods. Sure, he wasn't happy when the only cover he could find was a thorn bush....but he played fine otherwise.

Gloves are so you dont' tear up your hands sliding. the same goes for pads. I wear kneepads (old volleyball pads from my sister) and most people who play speedball wear elbow/forearm pads so they dont' kill their arms diving into bunkers.
people usually wear thick clothes to get more bounces, but it also takes away the pain (after a while though, you don't' notice it anyhow so)

gloves: they give protection for hand hits. People cut off the top 2 fingers so they can walk their trigger better. I love gloves, they also ensure you don't tear up your hand if you slide.
pads: knee pads are the most useful pad. If you slide alot or are on your knees often during a game. Get a good set. A good pair from a paintball company should offer good mobility and great padding. BTW pads go UNDER the cloths.
shirts: a thick shirt is nice, most people will layer 2 or so. Keep it a little loose in the body area.
pants: something a little baggy that has some ventilation.
shoes: anything that gives good traction and you can run in.
what you will eventually realize with all this gear is that by using it right you can get yourself bounces when you get shot. Pretty handy trick.

Its not a question of you're "manliness" or if you care about getting shot. Running around in shorts and teeshirt will get you no bounces, and you will not slide as far as if you were wearing proper gear.
I can't stand when people want to act like soft gear is for people who can't take pain.

gloves are useful for several reasons, including adding padding to your hand, some even have kevlar on the palm for sliding. a lot of people assume gloves are to protect your hands from hits and that sort of thing, and they are somewhat correct, but for the most part they're for sliding.
in the woods, i've actually found that i dont slide as much as i would if i were playing x-ball format, for fear of hitting a random log/thornbush - and therefore i don't really use gloves in the forest... still the decision is up to you...
2. Pads: in most of the pics ive seen, not many people wear pads, so im guessing that you dont really need them. will they restrict movement too much?
again, most pads are worn under the clothing, so you probably wouldn't see too much padding. the only padding i've ever heard that really constricts your movement is chest padding, and even then, it's not terrible. i would only be concerned about pads if you're worried about feeling pain when you're getting hit (which you'll get over fairly quickly) and for sliding.
maybe you should play a few games and decide how much of that you'll be doing before you decide if you need pads or gloves...
3. Shirts: i heard that you usually want to wear thicker shirts/layers so that the paintballs dont hurt as much.
this is somewhat true as well, but more on the baggy side than thick side... no matter what you're going to wear it's going to hurt for a while, and if you're wearing a sweater - you're going to be sweaty and in pain, so i would suggest just going ahead and wearing something loose to promote bounces...
remember, we play the game for fun - not because it hurts, so why would you be worried about the pain when you're playing? you should really be more concerned with staying in the game than getting out...
4. Pants: jeans should be fine, right?
any pant or jeans should be fine, but again - think of it as the shirts, you want to promote bouncing, so don't worry about the clothing being too thick... if it is you'll just get HOT!
5. Shoes: should i just wear tennis shoes or boots or something else? especially for woodsball?
for woodsball i would suggest some plastic cleats, just as if you were playing speedball you're going to need grip to run and move quickly when you realize you're being shot at... or at least to return fire...
any pair of boots or shoes will work fine for a few games until you can decide weather you want boots or cleats, just dont wear your favorite pair of shoes... they will get destroyed...

my response is in a different text, i hope it helps a bit, and remember the game is about fun, not pain.

i bought an Evil Jersey and Evil pants. mostly since im a middle player on our local field it helps to be able to slide in the dirt and not hinder your playing because of it.
Jersey's mostly have padding on them on the elbow / shoulder and have venting on the side to keep u cool in a heated fight especially in hotter climates
Pants: mine have long knee pads since i slide on my knee's or fall on my butt and go prone from there. that and it has pockets that i can keep my barrel sock in so i don't lose it.
Paintball is going to hurt for the first shot or so. after that the adrenaline will take over and it will not hurt as much, just remember that the pain goes away very rapidy and the welts don't last very long.
Some things i'd like to also mention, that if you play speedball, there will be times when a person will run past u and shoot u pointblank practically. that is called bunkering, it does hurt more than an average pop in the chest or legs but its a risky strategy and keep your eyes open for that and pop em twice in the mask once they charge. Everytime i go to play i always see kids with 3 shots in their back complaining that they got "shot point blank and thats illegal!" so i thought i'd add that into the fray of info.

People wear gloves for the most part just for a little more grip on the gun, and a little hand protection. The reason most people wear gloves with the fingers cut off is so that their fingers are more free and can move faster(say when walking your gun)
2. "Speedballers" wear a lot more pads then I think most people realize. They wear slide shorts(to protect the balls, and thighs) They wear knee pads b/c a lot of times people are sliding on their knees or knealing in a bunker. The other thing that a lot of people wear are elbow pads. They were these b/c of sliding on their stomach and arms. They also wear padding for bounces. We don't wear pads b/c we are afraid to get hit, but b/c we want bounces as well as we want more comfort when running, and sliding around. I wouldn't say pads are more for woodsball, but if you want them, these are the 3 pads I would buy.(and own) They shouldnt restrict your movement too much.
3. Shirts: i heard that you usually want to wear thicker shirts/layers so that the paintballs dont hurt as much. 2 long-sleeve shirts should be enough right?
All the tournaments I've played restrict you to a undershirt and jersey. People don't wear more layers to stop pain, just bounces. I would just wear an undershirt and a long-sleeve shirt.
4. Pants: jeans should be fine, right?
If you are just playing woodsball, then jeans are fine. If you are played "speedball" then we will be on your knees a lot and will tear your jeans fast, in this case I recommend paintball pants.
5. Shoes: should i just wear tennis shoes or boots or something else? es | | |
