Looking for some inexpensive starter kits for my kids...
New here....my neighbors all seem to have gotten paintball setups for x-mas, so I decided I (and my kids 14 & 16) might get in on the action, so to speak. Been reading threw the stickies as well.
I was thinking of a Spyder PILOT ACS for myself, but not sure what to get for the kids. Perhaps32 Degrees Icon X setups? I am trying to keep theirs under 100$ each for a kit, just to see if they like it. Only thing I can see as a requirement off the bat is a 20oz tank over the little one I see with most of the starter kits around.
My one neighbors gun looks like this, but I think it is the basline model, as his wife paid 29$ or so for it on sale, I believe.

I don't feel like going into why I oppose that, suffice to say it's been talked about enough that you an find it by searching.
Y2K:
the 32 degrees markers have reiability issues; they're priced low for a reason. If you want to get them markers that operate the same, yet are more reliable, look at spyders or pirahanas. any of the newer spyders(as in, after 2006) are very reliable and have a large base of parts that are interchangable should something need replaced.

The spyder is absolutely the better quality gun. The Icon is a clone in design, not in quality.
Matrix, can you ban idiots like snipex for post padding? He's either a sock of someone one of us has made mad, or he's a noob trying to get his post count and point count up. He comes in here, then the rest of the "IoNz R tEh L33t ZoRz!!!1!111!!!one!" crowd shows up, and it confuses the ones looking for help. Contribute something with an explanation(and some intelligent thought) to back it up or go away.....

I would like to chime in that I hate starter sets as the masks in them are absolutely horrid. If you kids do pick up an interest do them a favor and purchase a high end mask that will be more comfortable and breath more.

If your going to get a "starter set" check out some of your local Paintball shops. Their pricing might not be as good as what you would find online but you can handle the gear at most of them and see if Mask A fits as well as Mask B.
If your in the Southern California area a few good shops that I shop at are:
Medina's Paint Ball - 24318 Hemlock Ave, Moreno Valley, CA
Gramp's & Grizzly's Outpost - 7203 Arlington Ave, Riverside, CA
The Paintball Shop Several locations (and my teams Sponsor)

You won't notice much of a difference in performance between the Sonix and Icon X, they're both stacked tube blowbacks. The Icon X is also made with lower quality parts, so I would stay away.
As a matter of fact, you won't notice much difference between any of the Spyders either. My advice would be to get Spyder Victors, or if you want to go electronic then pick up the VS1.

Spyders are great for beginners, just don't EVER put to much $ into them i learned the hard way. if your kids like paintball after a while, have them sell their guns and get something better, like an Ion or a PMR, then from there they can decide if they want high ends or not.
i Have a nice Spyder Imagine setup that has ACS and an upgraded board (makes the gun shoot faster) that i could sell you pm me if interested

Heres a bit of advice before you go out and buy everything. Rent!! Rent a few times to see if they like it and if they dont then you didnt waste your money.

I've seen a days rental cost be the same as just buying a refurbed Spyder multiple times.

We just plan on playing in a field at the end of our subdivision that is also a dirt\BMX track. (We being the adults in the neighborhood) I'm hoping to keep the cost of my equipment under 150-200$ total, not including paint obviously.
I am going to check out a few good sporting good stores that sell paintball, as I would like to try out a few masks, to see what I like. The cheap ones that come in the eBay combo kits seem to go for 10-15$ on their own, so can't be very good.

You probably won't find any good masks at a sporting goods store like sports authority, dicks, etc.

As far as "good" masks they've got some low end JT stuff, that's about it.

The best thing you can do is go out and try as many varieties as possible, find what works best for each individual, then either scour ebay for it if you want it used, or help out fellow members of the community by looking on boards such as this for the items you want. Both parties benefit in that way.
